#BehindTheShot with #CanonExplorerOfLight @peter_hurley: “I was elated when I got the call from Sailing World Magazine asking me to photograph Bruce Kirby, the designer of the Laser. You see, I’ve been sailing a Laser since I was 10 years old and trained for 2 Olympic Games in the boat. The sailing lead into modeling, which caused me to pick up a camera, so the fact that this man built this particular boat changed the trajectory of my life forever. Obviously, I jumped at the chance to get Bruce, who just celebrated his 90th birthday in front of my camera.
I knew he has this handsome salty dog look of the sea type thing going on and I envisioned shooting him on a black background in black and white. I had my EOS R ready for the challenge and got to his home looking for a clean wall of some sort that I could darken up a bunch. I had trouble finding anything, but luckily Bruce had a black comforter that did the trick. I got it placed behind him and began firing away.
The thing that changed my entire game is the ability to swing the display on the EOS R out and point it up toward me as I was shooting. I had to have Bruce sit and I like to shoot from a low angle at my subject, so being able to move the display out and point it up helped me immensely. The only reason this became possible at all was due to the mirrorless eye detection technology within the EOS R. It became a game changer for me and I haven’t been able to put the camera down since I first got my hands on one. I shot this using a 24-105 EF lens mounted to the EOS R using an adapter at ISO 200 1/100th sec shutter at F/4. I was able to convert it to black and white using Capture One software and exported it without any retouching. I’m pretty proud of this shot in particular and the magazine picked some other gems to run in their article. It meant the world to me to photograph this sailing legend and I can’t wait until the article runs in Sailing World!” Camera: Canon EOS R
Lens: EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM
