JAPAN’S REAL SHOGUN! šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ NIKKO

[Music] come on everyone once again here fromĀ
incredible Japan today we’re in a place calledĀ Ā
Nico we arrived here yesterday it’s about anĀ
hour and 50 minutes away from Tokyo on theĀ Ā
express train so we actually got this thingĀ
called the 4-day ni pass which includes theĀ Ā
transport here from asakusa station in Tokyo andĀ
the return and it also lets you get an unlimitedĀ Ā
amount of the transport within Nico so a lot ofĀ
people do that I think they only have availableĀ Ā
a 2-day pass or a 4-day pass and since we got hereĀ
yesterday and we’ve still got two full days now weĀ Ā
got the 4-day pass cuz it’s going to be 3 days inĀ
total and that was $35 per person and in the videoĀ Ā
description below you can find the link for theĀ
Nico pass and this is the amazing view from ourĀ Ā
hotel can see everything pretty much the snowĀ
cap mountains in the background might actuallyĀ Ā
be snowing while we’re here so yeah those guysĀ
might get even wider later on run and the hotelĀ Ā
is really good it’s called Nico Station 2 justĀ
$55 a night and that also includes a pretty goodĀ Ā
breakfast so I was doing some editing work hereĀ
yesterday with the nice views and it’s just aĀ Ā
small room but not too bad and the bathroom’s hereĀ
car’s getting beautiful for the day good morningĀ Ā
it’s like a planing bathroom that’s what we wereĀ
saying yesterday or a cruise bathroom look it’sĀ Ā
all like plastic so this is the center of NicoĀ
right next to the hotel that we’re staying inĀ Ā
and that is the station where we arrived where theĀ
majority of you will be arriving if you come hereĀ Ā
got a pretty cool old train Carriage here mustĀ
be how the original ones were yeah the TramwayĀ Ā
was open 1910 and you also have the little busĀ
station here I think that’s the Hop On Hop offĀ Ā
bus that’s included in our ticket so right nowĀ
we’re going to go on a bit of a walk we’re hereĀ Ā
and we’re going to walk all the way up and there’sĀ
a bunch of different temples we’ll go to thoseĀ Ā
first and there’s also a waterfall somewhere IĀ
think then for the waterfall we need to get a aĀ Ā
bus though yeah cuz uh I think it’s far away fromĀ
here and since the bus is already included in theĀ Ā
pass just uh getting that uh and from what I readĀ
uh the bus like a loop that’s why by uh I thinkĀ Ā
majority of Tours get the pass here to just travelĀ
around niik so one thing that’s really nice aboutĀ Ā
n is how quiet it is after the Tokyo chaos yeahĀ
it’s like a big difference from Tokyo uh becauseĀ Ā
we do see tourists here uh but it’s not that manyĀ
really and like last night when we walked aroundĀ Ā
the town it was like a ghost town because I thinkĀ
many people just do day trips but it’s very calmĀ Ā
and relaxing I think it’s good after Tokyo cuzĀ
we love Tokyo but sometimes it was a bit tooĀ Ā
much overwhelm me so it’s basically just thisĀ
Main Street and all the stores are on the mainĀ Ā
road on both sides so just the usual reallyĀ
souvenir shops cafes restaurants lots of niceĀ Ā
traditional looking buildings so when we came hereĀ
yesterday the mountains were in the clouds so weĀ Ā
weren’t seeing it like this even though it’sĀ
cloudy today looks really awesome yeah but IĀ Ā
just remembered that it’s not 10:00 a.m. yet soĀ
I think uh during this time the the stores startĀ Ā
to open around 10 or after that so maybe that’sĀ
why it’s also extremely uh empty right [Music]
now [Music]
[Music]
so this is going to be our first attraction ofĀ
the day it’s called Shinko Bridge yeah I’ve seenĀ Ā
this place in pictures when it’s like AutumnĀ
and you’re getting all the colors of orangeĀ Ā
things like that I think Autumn would actuallyĀ
be the nicest time to come to Japan yes I thinkĀ Ā
so I wonder how the prices are but maybe I wouldĀ
prefer to come in Autumn yeah since Spring’s justĀ Ā
starting things are a bit dead it’s also notĀ
sunny today so yeah it looks a bit more dullĀ Ā
than usual still beautiful though ApparentlyĀ
that is one of the most beautiful bridges in
[Music]
Japan so that statue right there isĀ
of a Buddhist monk called shu andĀ Ā
he’s apparently the first documented personĀ
in Nico from around the 700s so I did readĀ Ā
that this place was founded in the 700s byĀ
a Buddhist monk so I’m guessing it was thatĀ Ā
monk back there and three of the templesĀ
in this complex are UNESCO world heritage
sites so this first one is the renoi temple andĀ
this was the first one that was established hereĀ Ā
by the monk that I just mentioned in 766 althoughĀ
it wouldn’t have looked like that back then itĀ Ā
would have just been like a simple Hut and youĀ
got to pay 10 to so this one is 400 we’ll haveĀ Ā
to pay for each one that we go to so it turnsĀ
out that you can’t film inside basically justĀ Ā
had these golden Butters but they were absolutelyĀ
massive a lot bigger than it looks in the pictureĀ Ā
is this the Zen Garden yes looks lovely doesn’tĀ
it didn’t we have like a little B in our gardenĀ Ā
was a massive B A big one was about half a MeerĀ
old think it was behind the pond wasn’t it yeahĀ Ā
I did they put the bamboos at the back andĀ
I love my parents tried to reconstruct thisĀ Ā
at our our home in England but many places thatĀ
you go around the world have Japanese gardens IĀ Ā
remember when I lived in Houston one of the mainĀ
parks there had a Japanese garden famous [Music]
worldwide
[Music]
that is one cool pagod yeah beautiful red with theĀ
colors like inside yeah Green’s gold so this oneĀ Ā
is 1,300 to enter and it’s considered to be theĀ
most most important one I’ll tell you why veryĀ Ā
soon when we get to the place wow so this one isĀ
way more impressive so many more buildings alsoĀ Ā
the red kind of style more golden though so theseĀ
are the monkeys that see here and speak no evilĀ Ā
oh okay oh yeah I see the monkeys now that’sĀ
what it’s supposed to represent and there’sĀ Ā
supposed to be another one of an elephant thatĀ
the artist I think he drew it without ever seeingĀ Ā
an elephant oh really how how is that possible IĀ
don’t know maybe he saw another drawing I imagine
[Music] yeah [Music] man I think this this mightĀ
be one of the most impressive temples we’ve everĀ Ā
seen yeah like a complex it really is stunningĀ
and impressive so big so much to see look atĀ Ā
this gate well not of those dragons yeah I likeĀ
their the golden ice really beautiful really is
beautiful [Music]
Masterpiece so we’re now going to the mainĀ
part of the complex which is the main reasonĀ Ā
why it’s so busy with so many people and it’sĀ
a shrine where to gawa Leu is buried and he’sĀ Ā
the founder of the too gawa period the Edo periodĀ
that I mentioned in the other videos so that wasĀ Ā
a time where Japan was unified under just oneĀ
rule one Kingdom and yeah the founder of it isĀ Ā
buried here important person for the history ofĀ
Japan so the new series Shogun which we haven’tĀ Ā
watched yet apparently the main character is basedĀ
on this guy but he has a different name in the
series quite the workout to get here yeah IĀ
think it was maybe 400 around 400 steps andĀ Ā
there’s more so it was his son that orderedĀ
this to be built for him pretty much rightĀ Ā
around the time he died I think he died in 1616Ā
and that’s when construction began so this isĀ Ā
his grave rain really starting to pick up yeahĀ
so he was the one that ordered the Edo CastleĀ Ā
to be built where we went in Tokyo where theĀ
Imperial Palace is now it was the man the mightyĀ Ā
leader there’s another queue here maybe peopleĀ
paying their respects to [Music] him [Music]
right
[Music] so this will be the last Temple soĀ
the third and final UNESCO heritage siteĀ Ā
called futarasan this one will be a lot moreĀ
emptier than that last one this dude looksĀ Ā
cool it yeah happy choppy very happy I wish weĀ
could have seen it here when it was covered inĀ Ā
snow I’m guessing it was just like a week agoĀ
or something this Tory gate was made of bronzeĀ Ā
in 1799 in Shinto belief and architecture TĀ
Gates Mark the boundary between worldly andĀ Ā
sacred spaces so I guess that’s why we alwaysĀ
see them at the entrances of the temples and
shrines man it’s really pouring it down nowĀ
the forecast is so bad for the rest of theĀ Ā
day and tomorrow though so I think thinkĀ
we’re just going to have to go for it andĀ Ā
hopefully it doesn’t get heavier showsĀ
like 90% chance of rain over the next
hours the golden
bunny so it seems like I’m allowed to filmĀ
from here at this one at the tooa grave thereĀ Ā
was also a really awesome main Shrine thereĀ
but I couldn’t fil inside have to come andĀ Ā
see yourself so this one is 300 per personĀ
and I think it has like a garden too a bigĀ Ā
area not just the temples wow check that outĀ
the bronze lantern from 1292 super [Music] old
[Music]
[Music] you [Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so back in the center now we just missedĀ
the bus to go to the waterfall and it’sĀ Ā
only going to pass in like 40 minutesĀ
time so I think we’re just going to eatĀ Ā
here we’re going to eat near the waterfallĀ
instead I think these are all restaurants weĀ Ā
have no problem for finding food aroundĀ
here I know this one’s a bakery since
1873 so got some pretty interestingĀ
options here seems like there’s a lotĀ Ā
of sets I don’t know if theyĀ
have a specific name for thisĀ Ā
kind of thing Bento Box bento boxĀ
that’s the one yeah where’s the
guoa okay I think we’ll get that for startersĀ
440 I might get this Tori sober 930 noodlesĀ Ā
with chicken so noodle soup has been my goto inĀ
this colder weather this one looks amazing justĀ Ā
like the others that I’ve had dad got somethingĀ
different sausage sausage is what is that littleĀ Ā
thing that’s the shrimp in it shrimp temp on yoursĀ
is like mine just with shrimp yes and then I don’tĀ Ā
know what that is no I think it’s potato cat withĀ
the Yuba I don’t know if they say Yuba or I don’tĀ Ā
know how they say it but it’s a thing that’sĀ
traditional from this region of niik and it’sĀ Ā
basically a tofu like um crisp not not crispyĀ
but like a layered tofu it’s different but it’sĀ Ā
good I like it so that’s tofu on the outside onĀ
the inside oh on the inside and then potato onĀ Ā
the outside okay from the picture I thoughtĀ
it was going to be the chunky noodles Bento
her sorry sorry okay sorry oh pay downstairs payĀ
downstairs okay thank you yeah boxes always lookĀ Ā
cool that the Miso yeah miso sou rice maybe riceĀ
and wow looks sool all sorts of different thingsĀ Ā
yeah tofu uh based uh food I think it’s likeĀ
the specialty of this restaurant and it’s allĀ Ā
like tofu stuff oh so this is tofu yeah andĀ
this so that’s a tofu skin yeah looks weirdĀ Ā
yeah it’s different I’ve never seen it like thisĀ
before I think I need some soce so sauce maybeĀ Ā
you want some of this this this sauce is good IĀ
think oh that one yeah it’s uh salty very saltyĀ Ā
yeah so the Bento Box all that was 2,000 rightĀ
too salty just got to dip it a little bit then
mhm [Music]
[Music]
[Music] so we’re at the entrance of the waterfallĀ
that we wanted to come to kegon we actually gotĀ Ā
on the wrong bus don’t get on the world heritageĀ
bus it does not come here does go to the shrinesĀ Ā
though and now we’re in the snowy mountains thatĀ
we saw before I had no idea we’d even be comingĀ Ā
places with snow in Ni yeah it’s definitely beenĀ
snowing heavy here all the mountains completelyĀ Ā
covered looks pretty similar to the center of NicoĀ
similar kind of layout Main Street with all the
stores more like ice
actually you’re next mom and that overĀ
there the mountain is uh Act volcanoĀ Ā
called NTI really yeah you can hike it notĀ
now probably another season funny thing isĀ Ā
it actually doesn’t seem that cold hereĀ
in Nico I think it felt colder in TokyoĀ Ā
yeah surprisingly because the temperatureĀ
here is I think the same but uh maybe it’sĀ Ā
the wind in Tokyo maybe the wind come from theĀ
ocean I don’t know there’s something differentĀ Ā
yeah there was a icy cold wind and hereĀ
there’s no wind yeah maybe that’s [Music]
why a sweet so even the waterfall is coveredĀ
in snow definitely didn’t expect that eitherĀ Ā
don’t know if you can see it back there we’reĀ
going to like a proper paid Viewpoint so it’llĀ Ā
be even better nice yeah it’s funny cuz uh aĀ
few days ago I searched for this place and theĀ Ā
pictures were showing snow and I said to youĀ
oh I wish it would be like that and that’s howĀ Ā
it is today so I’m happy yeah cuz we thoughtĀ
that picture was probably from like JanuaryĀ Ā
not not spring it’s it’s really beautiful withĀ
the white snow that makes up for the dead treeĀ Ā
appearance at least how much was it uh fiveĀ
70 per person okay thank you good job yeahĀ Ā
much better from down here yeah we couldn’t seeĀ
all this part before it’s like we are in IcelandĀ Ā
yeah I think that’s the only other time we’veĀ
seen a waterfall with snow yeah it was kindĀ Ā
of similar to this some of them yeah we gotĀ
water coming down here from somewhere [Music]
you going to get some of these finger socksĀ
they’re fun yeah I wonder if they’re more
comfortable 500 mL yeah what the hell is thatĀ
put liquid in there so if you come to the backĀ Ā
there’s actually another massive waterfall loadsĀ
and loads of water had no idea this one was there
[Music]
either [Music] so we come back to where weĀ
got dropped off by the bus and everythingĀ Ā
everything is completely closed now I don’tĀ
know what time it is it must be around 400Ā Ā
p.m. everything shuts so we’re just makingĀ
our way to a lake which is just right hereĀ Ā
it’s right next to the waterfall I thinkĀ
this is basically what’s flowing into thatĀ Ā
waterfall that we just visited so even hereĀ
you get one of those amazing massive GatesĀ Ā
not only at the entrances to Temples then andĀ
there’s the beautiful Lake in the background
so we’re going to try and find a cafe I thinkĀ
Carol saw on Google Maps that there’s a niceĀ Ā
cafe with the lake view yeah this has been aĀ
awesome surprise it all looking like this it’sĀ Ā
almost like a a pebbly beach that we’re on nowĀ
you can see that the water level would usually beĀ Ā
higher there’s a pier and actually the waterfallĀ
the main part of it it was quite weak the waterĀ Ā
that was coming out of it if you see which as atĀ
other times of the year it’s like a really thickĀ Ā
waterfall and this is beautiful the calm snowyĀ
Lake I think these are accommodations aren’tĀ Ā
they yeah this is a fancy hotel the RIT but thereĀ
are other options down here yeah I think it wouldĀ Ā
be cool to stay here maybe in summer it willĀ
be cool too do some kaying many things to doĀ Ā
and also hikes around here I saw there are manyĀ
hikes beautiful hikes oh yeah you can hike toĀ Ā
the volcano so this lake is a th200 m above seaĀ
level so that’s why it’s like snowy and icy hereĀ Ā
Tokyo I guess is just the same elevation as theĀ
sea [Music] almost so in the 4-day ni pass thatĀ Ā
we have it actually includes a cruise on thisĀ
Lake that I thought we were going to be doingĀ Ā
in this video but then I found out that it onlyĀ
starts mid April so just in a couple of week’sĀ Ā
time you’ll be able to do a cruise around here IĀ
guess they don’t really have it during the winterĀ Ā
so we were just saying that probably be nicer toĀ
stay around here than where we are even where weĀ Ā
are is very nice but obviously having a big lateĀ
like this is a lot nicer and then we could haveĀ Ā
done the opposite got on the bus from here toĀ
the shrines and temples and then stayed aroundĀ Ā
here not sure if this Cafe is going to be openĀ
though on Google it says it closes at 5:00 butĀ Ā
yeah judging by how closed everything is I’mĀ
thinking it’s going to be closed I think we’reĀ Ā
in luck looks like the cafe is the only thingĀ
that’s open in this entire place right now theĀ Ā
lights are on so it was that place back there weĀ
saw the lights on and people inside but then whenĀ Ā
we going to open the door the owner said thatĀ
it’s closed so no coffee for us around thisĀ Ā
Lake I think where we’re staying you can get aĀ
coffee and if worse comes worse you can um go toĀ Ā
Food Mark 24/7 or a 7-Eleven get some dodgyĀ
coffee sometimes pretty good [Music] though
so this happens quite a bit on our travelsĀ
sometimes we’ll go to the place where it’sĀ Ā
popular for day trips but we actually go thereĀ
and stay there two nights and it’s usually kindĀ Ā
of like this so very busy during the day andĀ
then a complete ghost town at night and earlyĀ Ā
in the morning it’s kind of funny to see theĀ
difference but we like staying in places likeĀ Ā
that [Music] too so that’s going to be it hereĀ
from Nico we actually spent all of yesterdayĀ Ā
here too but it was absolutely pouring it downĀ
all day so we didn’t even go out we were justĀ Ā
doing work so from the window you can see it’s wayĀ
more covered in snow now so probably if you go toĀ Ā
that Lake Area it’ll be even nicer the snowyĀ
scenery and in the next video we’re headingĀ Ā
to a place called kusatsu We’re actually about toĀ
head there right now we’re getting on the returnĀ Ā
train back to Tokyo and yeah then we’ll head toĀ
kusatsu and that place is an on town like a hotĀ Ā
spring town which are very famous here in JapanĀ
so really looking forward to that they also haveĀ Ā
the onson towns near here you can get like a busĀ
there in the center and it’ll take you it’s notĀ Ā
that far we just didn’t go cuz we’re going to coĀ
atle right now so yeah we’ll leave it for thereĀ Ā
so that’ll be where the next video is coming fromĀ
so if you like this one just drop a like on theĀ Ā
video as usual subscribe see you more videos likeĀ
this and we’ll see you in the next one [Music]

  1. Chris, whatā€™s the penalty for dropping litters?šŸ˜±šŸ„°šŸ¤”šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§

  2. Another awesome video. The waterfall was beautiful. I like how you kid around with Carol, then you said "you're next mom" hilarious!šŸ˜‚

  3. Been following jumping places since 2019 and always loved the content! I have traveled to many places also because of these videos. I really like how you two can now travel as your job and I can definitely see the passion in you two! You deserve it!!

  4. Hi Chris and Carol! Your trip to Japan is really nice to watch, and I'm glad to see that you guys made it there this time around! I particularly love this video because I'm in the middle of watching Shōgun and it was nice to see the real shrine of Tokugawa Ieyasu! The Shōgun series is almost done, and is now on it's last episode this coming Monday; I suggest you watch it when you have some time. I also want to recommend watching Tokyo Vice. Cheers and enjoy your stay in Japan!

  5. ę—„å…‰ć«ćÆć€ęœ‰åćŖē“…č‘‰ć®ć‚¹ćƒćƒƒćƒˆćŒć‚ć‚Šć¾ć™ć®ć§ć€ē§‹ć«čØŖć‚Œć‚‹ć®ć‚‚ćŠå‹§ć‚ć§ć™ć€‚

  6. You know how you can lock your eyes on a bit of water just coming down the waterfall and follow it down as it turns into mist, so beautiful, calming, and relaxing to the eye. Thanks guys

  7. Thanks Chris and Carol for bringing us to Nikko. What a fabulous place. Another fantastic video. šŸ‘šŸ˜ŠšŸ’™šŸ‡®šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µā›©ļø

  8. Wow those temples were stunningā›©ļø Iā€™ve never seen anyone else travel to Nikko in other Japan videos Iā€™ve watched, so refreshing to see something different.

  9. Best video of Nikko ive ever seen! I went in November and itā€™s really gorgeous with the fall colors.

Btw Asakusa is pronounced a-sak-sa, the ā€˜uā€™ is silent. I said it wrong for my first few visits

  10. Iā€™ve been following you now for a long time ever since first time your lady went to visit your parents in Portugal. My husband and I love traveling. We are your parents age range. Love your site Jumping Places.

  11. I am Japanese. Once again, I thought that the scenery in Japan is beautiful. I would like to visit Nikko again. thank you.

  12. @1:55 We call those "unit baths" (ćƒ¦ćƒ‹ćƒƒćƒˆćƒć‚¹) in Japanese, probably because basically they are just all one plastic unit. You can get water pretty much anywhere and it doesn't really matter in one of those.

  13. Nikko is a popular place in the autumn. The zig-zag road up to Lake Chuzenji is beautiful in the fall with all of the changing leaves. There are lots of small inns surrounding the lake and Kegon Waterfall is always good to see. Edit: Ah! Never mind. I see you made it up there later in the video.

  14. @8:52 In Kyoto at Nijo-jo (äŗŒę”城), the castle, you can see paintings of tigers on the walls, except the faces are all messed up. Apparently, the reason was similar. The artists had likely never seen a tiger in real life, but likely had see preserved pelts (the animal's skin a fur) but just had to guess at the faces, or at least that is what I was taught in a Japanese art history class.

  15. I really enjoy all of your videos, but for me, you guys do NOT belong in a big city like Tokio, too much people, too much stress.
This episode is much better and relaxing!
    Cheers
