【奥日光】冬の絶景を満喫!♨️⛰/自然が堪能できるハイキング12kmコース!🥾(湯ノ湖→中禅寺湖)

Hello. Today, I’m coming to Lake Yunoko. Lake Yunoko is a lake located in the western part of Nikko. This is a dammed lake created by the eruption of Mitake Volcano in the northeast. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, it has a somewhat mysterious atmosphere.

The water from the lake flows down into Yutaki, passes through Senjogahara and Ryuzu Falls, and then flows into Lake Chuzenji. The flowing water turns into a river and is called “Yugawa”. So, this time I would like to walk along Yukawa to Lake Chuzenji.

Our destination is Futarasan Shrine Otorii Gate at Lake Chuzenji. It is about 12km. This will be a slightly longer hiking course. But before that, let’s take a walk around Yumoto Onsen, which borders Lake Yunoko. Yumoto Onsen is a hot spring town surrounded by nature and has a calm atmosphere.

You can enjoy nature during the day and soothe your fatigue at the hot springs at night. Vehicles are not allowed to enter here. Let’s see what we have. Is this a reed?

Although it was once part of Lake Yunoko, it was separated from Lake Yunoko due to the accumulation of sediment carried by streams, and has remained to this day. Let’s walk a little further forward. Steam is rising along with the smell of sulfur. A hut is set up at each source.

The hot spring source supplies hot water not only to nearby accommodations, but also to Kotoku Onsen and Chuzenji Onsen, which are a little further away. There is a wooden path, so you can also tour on foot. After enjoying Yumoto Onsen, let’s start hiking.

There is still a lot of snow left, so be careful where you step. One of the attractions of hiking is enjoying the scenery and getting in touch with nature. Yumoto Onsen seen from a distance is also very beautiful. I’m walking around Lake Yunoko, but it’s mostly a forest.

It’s a fork in the road. We’re going via Yutaki, so let’s go to the left. However, I am curious about the scenery in front of me. Let’s take a look. Lake Yunoko is beautiful from any angle. The surface of the lake is frozen. That means it’s pretty cold.

It’s a view unique to winter. Wear gloves and walk slowly. The weather is very nice today, but the wind is strong. Even the sound of the wind was recorded, so I hope you understand. The fallen trees are also frozen. It’s very beautiful to look at, but it’s also quite cold.

We arrived at the southern end of Lake Yunoko. Next, we will go down from here. You can hear the sound of the waterfall. Let’s take a closer look. amazing! You will be overwhelmed by the sound and spray of the waterfall. The amount of water falling is impressive.

The road ahead looks like it will be difficult. It’s mostly a forest. It’s a downhill road, so be careful. The stairs are frozen, so be careful while holding on to the railings as you descend. What’s underneath? Is it a shop? I finally came down. It was really dangerous.

First, let’s take a look at the waterfall. The waterfall is 70 meters high and 110 meters long. The water that flows from Lake Yunoko becomes Yukawa, which flows through Senjogahara. There is a viewing platform where you can see it up close. The shop next door seems to be closed in winter.

Looks like they’ll be selling food too. That’s a shame. There are also maps of hiking trails. It seems that there is still a long way to go to Lake Chuzenji. Well, don’t think about it, just move your feet. You are now completely in the forest.

Oku-Nikko is surrounded by great nature, so it is often visited by hiking enthusiasts. Lately, I’ve been taking a lot of walks to recover my physical strength. I also started to like hiking. You can refresh your mind and body by coming into contact with nature. There was a signpost. The direction is correct, right?

There are many maps placed along the roads, which is helpful. We have now entered the Senjogahara area. here? Let’s get a little closer. It’s a very vast wetland. Is the mountain in the back the famous Mt. Nantai?

The surrounding area has been set up as a hiking course that can be walked in about 2 hours, so you can experience the magnificent nature. I left the forest. My field of vision suddenly expanded. There are 350 types of plants growing naturally.

From June to August, the best time to see cotton grass and cottontail grass is in full bloom. There is also a boardwalk, and many people come to see the flowers of alpine plants. It’s golden brown here. What kind of plant is it? Is it the autumn leaves of the grass?

If you know, please let me know. The contrast between the blue sky and the wetlands is beautiful. It’s a spectacular view. The name originates from the myth that long ago, it was a “battlefield” where the god of Mt. Nantai and the god of Mt. Akagi fought over Lake Chuzenji.

What was once a lake is now a vast wetland measuring approximately 400 ha. The area is about 8 times the size of Tokyo Disneyland. I was able to experience the magnificent nature. It was extremely beautiful. From here, we will enter the forest again.

I left the Senjogahara area. This is also the end of the wooden path. There was a signpost. Next is Ryuzu Falls, so head to the right. The river flowing on the right is “Yukawa”. The river is 11.2 km long and you can fish from May to September.

Because brook trout also live here, it is famous as a fishing spot for brook trout, which is rare in Japan. You can hear the sound of the waterfall. I’ll be there soon. The road is now in sight. Where should I go next? There’s a map, so check it out.

Once you cross the road, go back down. Well, let’s go. Be careful when crossing the road. There was a map here too. Let’s take a look. You can see the waterfall from below, so let’s go. The stairs are frozen, so be careful. You can see a little of Lake Chuzenji in the distance.

There’s only a little time left, so let’s do our best. You’re getting closer to the waterfall. This waterfall is located just before the water of Yukawa flows into Lake Chuzenji.

The waterfall is said to have been named because the waterfall is divided into two by a large rock near the base, resembling a dragon’s head. Its shape was created by lava created by the eruption of Mt. Nantai, and it flows over 210 meters.

You can see the “dragon head” of the waterfall at the bottom of the stairs, so let’s go there. There are restaurants and you can see the beautiful waterfall up close. It’s here. It’s very beautiful. There were a lot of trees, so I couldn’t really see it. If anyone knows, please let me know.

Let’s continue. From here on, it will be a public road for a while. I left at 11 o’clock today and it’s about 3 o’clock now. I walked about 7km, so I was really tired. We want to reach our destination before sunset, so let’s try a little harder. Maybe the one on the right?

Let’s get closer and take a closer look. You’ve finally arrived. Lake Chuzenji is large and beautiful. Let’s go to Nikko Futarasan Shrine Otorii, the entrance to Oku-Nikko. I walked for another hour. We finally arrived near the Otorii gate. The sun will be setting soon. The setting sun is dazzling.

Shall we walk along the lake? This is a lakeside park. You can take a break or take a boat ride. As expected, the swan boat is closed at this time. My shadow has become so long. It means the sun will set soon. The big torii gate came into view.

The torii gate is very high, about 15m high. It is the large torii gate of the Chugu shrine of Futarasan Shrine and is one of the symbols of Oku-Nikko and Lake Chuzenji. There is a place right next to the Otorii gate where you can see Lake Chuzenji up close.

Wow, it’s fantastic and beautiful. It was worth the 5 hours of walking. Lake Chuzenji is located at the entrance to Oku-Nikko. It is said that around 20,000 years ago, the valley was dammed up by lava from the eruption of Mt. Nantai, creating the original lake.

With a mild climate, you can enjoy the scenery of each season from the tranquil lakeside at the foot of Mt. Nantai. It’s really big when you see it up close. Let’s go a little further. The camera’s battery is almost dead. This is a famous photo spot of Lake Chuzenji.

It’s right at the entrance to Oku-Nikko. In June 2023, the G7 Tochigi Prefecture/Nikko Ministers’ Meeting for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment was held in Nikko City. From here, you can clearly see Mt. Nantai.

Mt. Nantai is 2,486 meters above sea level, and has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, making it a mountain that represents Tochigi Prefecture in both name and reality. The sun has set. Let’s go home before it gets dark.

We walked for over 5 hours today, but it was a fulfilling trip as we were able to enjoy a variety of scenery. See you on the next trip.
