– This is amazing! A tiny island? – It’s an island within the island! – An island within the island! Does this island have a name too? – This island is a sacred place, it is said to be the tomb of Amamichu! – Amamichu’s Tomb!

So, if it is named Amamichu’s tomb… I guess it’s after someone called Amamichu…? Well, Amamichu is a goddess. She is a female deity, and it is said that not only Amamichu but many other deities of this island are enshrined here.

So, to explain you what kind of goddess Amamichu is… According to old legends, Amamichu was ordered by a greater god to create the islands of Okinawa. So this is a place where this great legend lives. Furthermore, there was also a male god called “Shirumichu”

Hamahiga Island is where those two gods, Shirumichu and Amamichu, lived! – Yeah! interesting! – So they had children and produced descendants, which is said to be the beginning of Okinawa! – Wow! amazing! – Wonderful! – Such an amazing legend! – That’s great! Very mysterious!

– When we look here, it looks like a path! – That’s right! This path can only be crossed at low tide, – and Amamichu’s grave is on the other side, so let’s go! – Let’s go! I’d love to! So nice!

– There’s a rock that looks like a mushroom here! – Yes! The scenery is amazing, but this rock is also interesting! Most of the geological formations in Okinawa are made of Ryukyu limestone, and as it is full of holes, it is a fragile stone!

– It is said to be a soft stone! – Well, it’s a rock that was once a coral reef, and was lifted up and created. – So, only the bottom part has been washed away by the waves and collapsed, creating a mushroom shape like this! – I see! !

So, the tomb of Amamichu behind us is half cave-like, this cave is also a common feature in limestone strata. – Well then, let’s excuse ourselves and go up to Amamichu’s grave! – Let’s take a look!

– Oh, great! – It’s also like a cave here! – Really! It looks like something is living there… – This is the tomb of the Goddess, the tomb of Amamichu. – This is a grave, which means the Goddess is laying in here.

The top is really cave-like, and the ruins of the collapsed Ryukyu limestone seem to be protecting Amamichu’s grave. – It even looks like it’s acting as a roof! – I agree! – You can imagine that the gods of Amamichu and Shirumichu lived here! – That’s right!

– You can feel the myth that Ryukyu started here, and it’s an amazing place! – Really! There is also a cave called Shirumichu Utaki, where the gods Amamichu and Shirumichu lived, Shirumichu Utaki. An Utaki is a natural sacred space, a sacred place in nature.

– A place to pray! – Yes, in Japan, there are shrines, temples, and buildings, – but in Okinawa, there are none of those things… – Just in the middle of nature, there are Uganju (places of worship). Yes, only sacred spaces of nature, such as forests, caves, and springs!

– Is it said to have some kind of benefit? – Yes! In the Gama (natural cave) inside, there are large stalactites that hang down, reminiscent of the goddess’s breasts or something like that!

Therefore, it has become famous for being said to be effective in praying for a safe childbirth and for conceiving a child. – I see! Prosperity! – Yes! Prosperity of descendants! – That kind of symbolism can often be found! – This type of blessing!

Wow, wonderful Hamahiga Island! But where should we go next? Next, while crossing the islands connected by bridges, there is a wonderful island called Ikeijima, a little far away, – I’ll show you around there too! – Let’s go to Ikei Island and see the life on the island!

– Hello! Excuse us! – Hello! – What kind of place is it? A supermarket? – This Ikei joint shop has been running for 100 years – Amazing! Here? – Yes, 100 years!

This “community store” is not run by a company or so, but by local people who invested in it together. – Are there any other places on Ikei Island where you can shop? – There is only one on Ikei Island, here! That’s why without it, the residents’ lives would be very difficult.

There are no supermarkets or convenience stores on Ikei Island, and the closest convenience store is apparently 10km away. For elderly people who can’t go far, having a community store like this is a blessing and an indispensable part of their lives.

If you say that this is the only place where you can shop, wouldn’t it also be a place for everyone to gather? – It’s a place for islanders to socialize! – So it’s a place to buy food and a place to socialize!

– Wow! Also objects for offerings! ! – It’s an incense burner for Buddhist altar! – Even objects for the Buddhist altar here! – Yes! – Incense sticks too! – And these toothbrushes and cleaning tools!

– I love mozuku! – I love mozuku too! – Uruma City is the place that produces the most mozuku in Japan! – What about here? – This is a space called “Yukui Doro Shima-kiccha”, which has become a social gathering place inside the shop!

– “Kiccha”! Does it mean “kitchen”? – I think “Kiccha” is “Kissa” from “Kissaten” (coffee shop)! – Oh! “Kiccha” from “coffee shop”! I see, I see! So, a cafe? – Yes, It’s a cafe!

You can eat what you buy at the shop here, locals can socialize here, and visitors and tourists can take a break! – But it’s stylish, it feels like a cafe in the city! – I agree! People in the past, like my grandparents, or great-grandmother, when they were young,

Had a great habit of interacting inside their own villages it created a sense of fun, trust, and communication between people. I think that feeling is still living in a place like this. So even just for that reason, I think we should absolutely protect it.

Community shops are truly indispensable to the people of the island! The cooperative store system was created in northern Okinawa in 1906. It is operated by local residents, not corporations or local governments, and is unique to Okinawa.

Selling local specialities and buiIding a spirit of mutual help, this makes me feel the wisdom of our ancestors. – The joint shop was interesting right? – It was really interesting, and after all, it’s a very important place on the island!

It is! It’s not just a place to socialize, it’s a place to exchange information, and also in the event of a typhoon or power outage, there’s a generator running there so you can still shop, So it really is the lifeline of this island!
