Photo by #CanonExplorerOfLight @damianstroh: “Motocross rider Justin Cokinos kicks up dirt during a practice run. Justin is an up-and-coming motocross rider from Hanover, Massachusetts, and nearly is the perfect subject. He was attentive to what I was trying to achieve and patient while we figured out camera angles and positions.

Here are 5 tips for creating an action photo:
1. If you look like you are having fun it’s a lot more likely your subject will have fun as well! Show the subject your enthusiasm for the photo plan and how thankful you are to be photographing them.
2. Be prepared. Have a sense of what equipment you need before you get on location. This should allow you to spend more time photographing and less time trying to find the gear to execute the photo.
3. Choose your backgrounds carefully. More photos are damaged by poorly thought-out backgrounds than any other consideration.
4. Engage the athlete and see what they think may make a dramatic image. Remember the subject knows more about their sport than you do.
5. Don’t be afraid to try something completely different. If the shoot is pretty much in the bag, why not try something new?!”
