This scenic Swiss mountain drive begins in Susten and passes through Leuk, where Switzerland’s first satellite ground station is tucked away amid Alpine scenery, before climbing towards the authentic hillside village of Albinen and the Alpine thermal resort of Leukerbad. Winding mountain roads, dramatic cliffs, traditional Swiss villages and panoramic views over the Rhône Valley reveal an impressive variety of landscapes. 🏔️ High above the Rhône Valley, on the Brentjong plateau, stands a satellite ground station that has been part of Switzerland’s telecommunications history since the 1970s. Its giant dishes, including antennas measuring 32 metres in diameter, create an extraordinary contrast with the surrounding mountains. Further uphill, at approximately 1,300 m above sea level, lies Albinen, where traditional wooden houses are clustered on a steep, sunny slope. Beyond the village, the road continues towards Leukerbad — a thermal resort in the Dala Valley beneath the imposing cliffs of the Gemmi Pass. Together, these places reveal a distinctive side of Valais, where Alpine village heritage, mountain scenery and satellite technology meet.
