The walk begins at the north gate of the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade on a clear Saturday evening, where the covered street ends at the Semba Center Building. A few side streets of Semba, the old merchant town, then out to Midosuji.
North along the ginkgo trees of Midosuji, the 44-metre boulevard finished in 1937, with weekend visitors rolling suitcases toward their hotels. Then east into the back streets toward Kitahama, where the offices are closed for the weekend, an old plastered merchant house stands on a corner, and a red-brick building glows beside a small Gothic church.
Over Naniwabashi, the bridge guarded by four stone lions, and down into Nakanoshima Park, where food trucks and rows of white tents have drawn a Saturday night crowd. At the end of the lawn the red brick of the Osaka City Central Public Hall, finished in 1918, is lit up against the dark.
Past the columns of the Nakanoshima Library, out to Midosuji again and over the river at Oebashi, then north up the boulevard toward the towers of Umeda. Up the footbridge at Umeshin for a view down the avenue.
The walk ends at Ohatsu Tenjin, the small shrine tucked between the buildings of Sonezaki, its grounds hung with paper decorations, and in the busy streets around it as the Saturday night goes on.
