The walk begins in the Umeda crowd on a clear Wednesday evening, beside the red walls of Hankyu Higashi-dori. The arcade is full of karaoke signs, izakaya lanterns and people heading out after work, and the route follows it west toward the shops of EST under the Hankyu tracks.
Through the concourse of Osaka Station, everyone moving in a different direction, and out across the footbridge to the south side, with the Hanshin department store glowing on the far end and the boulevard spread out below.
Down past the Osaka Ekimae Buildings, the long blocks of shops and offices built south of the station from the 1970s, and across the main road into Kitashinchi, where small bars and restaurants fill every floor of the narrow buildings.
Out to Midosuji at Dojima and over the Dojima River on Oebashi, one of the stone bridges finished in 1935. A short stretch of Nakanoshima, past the old City Hall district, then over Yodoyabashi and onto Midosuji proper, the 44-metre boulevard finished in 1937, its ginkgo trees lit from below.
South along the boulevard, then east into the Semba grid that Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid out four hundred years ago. On a weekday night the wholesalers are shuttered and the side streets are almost empty; the walk follows Kawaramachi-dori and ends at Sakaisuji-Hommachi with the last commuters heading for the subway.
