Malmö, Sweden 4K Walking Tour | Gustav Adolfs torg, Lilla Torg & the Old Town | Natural Sound

Take a calm 4K walk into the Old Town of Malmö, Sweden, on a sunny Saturday afternoon in October. We start on the pedestrian street Södra Förstadsgatan, cross the canal at Södertull on a bridge lined with bronze shoes, and follow Södra Tullgatan to Gustav Adolfs torg, past the old theatre that is now H&M. From Södergatan, one of Malmö’s two oldest streets, we pass the striped Flensburgska huset and turn into Skomakaregatan, Shoemakers’ Street, to reach Lilla Torg with its half-timbered houses. Quiet lanes lead through Gamla Väster to the medieval main street with Rosenvingehuset and Jörgen Kocks hus, and we finish on Adelgatan just past The Mayfair Hotel Tunneln.

Natural stereo sound, with no narration and no music.

The buildings grow older as we walk. Malmö most likely grew up here because of the autumn herring fishery in the Öresund, and it is first named as a town in 1275. Västergatan, Adelgatan and Östergatan formed one long medieval main street; Adelgatan, from the Old Danish word for foremost, is recorded in 1392. In the early 1500s Malmö, then Danish, was a leading town of northern Europe: Jörgen Kock, mayor and master of the Danish mint, built his house from 1522 to 1525, and Rosenvingehuset followed in 1534. Stortorget was laid out from 1539 to 1542 and Lilla Torg in the 1590s, when merchants built in brick, like Flensburgska huset (probably 1595), and in half-timbering, like Hedmanska gården (1597). The vaulted cellar of Tunneln, under The Mayfair Hotel, is counted as the city’s oldest preserved building, and the red stepped-gable house beside it dates from 1519. After the ramparts came down, Gustav Adolfs torg was laid out from 1806 and named after King Gustav IV Adolf, who governed Sweden from Malmö from November 1806 to May 1807, and the town’s theatre opened on the square in 1809. In 1978 Södergatan became Malmö’s first pedestrian street.

Practical notes for the filming date: the Disgusting Food Museum on Södra Förstadsgatan is open daily 11:00 to 18:00 (adults 230 kronor). The staffed public toilets on Gustav Adolfs torg cost 10 kronor and are open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 11:00 to 15:45. Planting works on Södergatan run until the end of November 2026. The corner café between Skomakaregatan and Lilla Torg is being renovated and is due to reopen as a brasserie in spring 2027. Malmö C, the central station, is a few minutes’ walk north along Hamngatan.
