Mount Rokko rises right behind the city of Kobe. Every autumn, the top of it turns into a museum: Kobe Rokko Meets Art. In the woods, inside stations, on lookouts and in a botanical garden, works by about sixty artists are scattered across the mountaintop. This is one weekday, from Osaka on the Hankyu line, up by cable car and down by ropeway to Arima Onsen.

The Rokko Cable opened in 1932. It climbs about 500 meters over 1.7 kilometers in roughly ten minutes. We rode the green “retro” car, modeled on old streetcars. The station at the top is the original 1932 building, in an Art Deco style, and is listed as industrial heritage. Even its lobby was full of art.

At Tenrandai, two mountains — Rokko and one in Vietnam — hold a conversation. On the lawn at Kinenhidai stands a clear box hung with white shide, the paper streamers that mark the edge of a sacred space in Japan.

The ROKKO Museum of Sound keeps music boxes and player pianos more than a hundred years old, playing with no one at the keys. Its garden runs straight into the forest, and deep inside, Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin” was waiting: bronze, made in 2014, 2.4 meters tall and 1.2 tons, quietly watching from the trees.

Further in: a parade of terracotta animals, a dark hut where video plays on a pillar saved from a house that fell in the Noto earthquake, and “Illuminated Fruits” — bags hung through the trees, each painted by a child with the smile of someone they love. The further you walk, the more you want to see what comes next.

The Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden opened in 1933. Its climate is close to southern Hokkaido, and about 1,500 kinds of plants grow here. Art hides among the flowers, and in the gallery, Makino Tomitaro’s botanical drawings hang beside “machine plants” from a continent one artist invented.

At Rokko Garden Terrace, an “Instant Powerspot” enshrines a giant rice ball. You pick a rice ball, heat it in a microwave, make a wish, and say “ding!” yourself. Inside a mirrored cone, the mountain view spirals into a kaleidoscope.

Rokko Shidare, designed by architect Sambuichi Hiroshi, is built of Yoshino cypress branches so that it looks like one great tree standing on the mountain. Its “wind room,” cooled by ice in summer, became a gallery this autumn.

We came down on the Rokko-Arima Ropeway — 2,764 meters, twelve minutes through the air — to Arima Onsen, one of Japan’s three oldest hot springs. Among the steam of its brown “golden spring,” we finished the day with a cold draft beer.
