A Thursday evening in Osaka, from the office streets of Hommachi to the neon of Dotonbori — an hour in which the city hands itself over from people going home to people coming out.

The walk begins at 6:02 PM on Bakuromachi. The name comes from bakuro, horse traders:
a horse market stood here in the Edo period. Nothing of it remains but the name and a grid of
quiet streets, laid out when Semba was planned as a merchant town. South of it is Minamisemba,
once a district of textile wholesalers — the same warehouses now hold clothing and shoe shops,
and their shutters come down just as the first signs light up.

Amerikamura arrives with the crowd, and then the expressway: the road overhead runs along what
was the Nishiyokobori canal until it was filled in during the 1960s. The canal is gone, but its
name still sits on the intersections. West across Yotsubashi-suji — four bridges once crossed
two canals here in a square — the streets drop to Horie, named after a waterway dug in 1698.
Timber was floated down it, so this was a lumber district for centuries, then a furniture
district, and now a district of low buildings and soft light full of clothing shops.

Then the Dotonbori River. For a long time it was too dirty to walk beside; the clean water and
the riverside promenade are recent. Cruise boats slide under the bridges and the neon breaks
apart on the water. Up onto Ebisubashi in the thick of the crowd, along Dotonbori under its
canyon of signs, and into the narrow lane of Hozenji Yokocho — its stone paving was relaid after
two fires, paid for by donations from all over Japan, and the lane came back exactly as wide as
it had been: under three metres, so that every voice sounds close.

East through the arcades of Sennichimae to Nipponbashi, still bright well after nine.

About 4.5 km, a little over an hour, with music and Japanese/English captions.
