The walk begins in Semba on a clear Wednesday afternoon, in the grid of office blocks that Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid out four hundred years ago. Delivery carts cross the quiet side streets, and the plane trees throw long shadows across the pavement.
North along Hiranomachi, past the old securities houses with their green shopfronts — this block has handled Osaka’s money since the Edo period, and the Stock Exchange still stands a few streets ahead at Kitahama.
At Kitahama the city opens onto the river. The walk crosses Naniwabashi, the bridge with the four bronze lions and the stone lamps, and comes down onto Nakanoshima — the long island held between the Dojima and Tosabori channels, where the domains once kept their rice warehouses and the park now runs green under the expressway.
Over Tenjinbashi to the north bank. The Okawa is wide and slow here, and in July the boat procession of the Tenjin Matsuri passes beneath this bridge.
On the far side begins Tenjinbashi-suji — at 2.6 kilometres, the longest covered shopping street in Japan. The walk follows it north through block after block of coffee houses, kimono shops, ramen counters and old signboards, in the cool half-light under the roof.
Out at the far end into Temma, where the elevated expressway runs low overhead and the streets turn residential. The walk ends among the apartment blocks, with the sky back overhead.
