Stara Zagora: Bulgaria’s Most Underrated City Center? – 4K Walking Tour

This is a walking tour of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria – a lively city center built right on top of the Roman town of Augusta Traiana. We start on Tsar Simeon Veliki Boulevard, the main pedestrian street, where the cafés and terraces stay full all day.

The whole center burned down in 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War. It was rebuilt on a new grid plan, which is why the streets here are so straight and easy to walk. In the City Garden you pass the monument to the defenders of Stara Zagora, raised in 1902 for the battle of July 1877.

Then comes the best part. Right next to the courthouse, the old Roman forum sits below street level, with the ruins of the Beroe fortress close by. You walk past almost 2,000 years of history on the way to your coffee.

We also stop at St. Nicholas Church and pass the Museum of Religions, set inside a mosque built in 1409.
