Those "boxes" you drove over are called "Flush Medians" When you're turning off they are there for exactly that purpose. You are using it for it's intended purpose. Well done.
They provide a safe zone for stopping in the middle of the road while you're waiting to turn and create a wider gap between traffic travelling the opposite way. Provided other drivers stay in their lane.

maori pronunciation is very simple… the vowel sounds are consistent (unlike english) for all words… a = ah, e = ear without the r, i = eee, o = or without the r, u = you without the y.. the combination vowel sounds are just the two vowel sounds run together… wh = f and ng is like ny

As someone who is fascinated by Geology it's interesting to see the remnants of so many volcanic eruptions on the North Island. I can see from road cuttings that a thick covering of white ash forms a geologically recent cover across many of the landscapes. The tectonic folding of rocks into mountains seen on the South Island is somewhat lacking on the North Island. I would love to live in a place that was geologically alive, but alas I live in Australia. Though my region near Cairns is full of recent cinder cones, volcanic vents and hot springs, none of them are active…… apparently. One can only wish 🌋

What a beautiful country. Way back 58 yrs ago we did a school project on New Zealand and I always used to say I was emigrating to there. Sadly all those years later I haven't even visited.

I may have an answer to the condensation, so would you like the condensed version…it involves a can of milk 😆 I was going to comment on the hot springs, but I’ll keep it on the back burner 😂 That rope bridge reminded me of some which I walked over during a holiday in Costa Rica. As for whether walking over one is safe, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it 🤣

As always, this video made my day also. A lot of geology/ What else I can ask for! Yes Chris, you were right on the money with your comments on Hot Spring. Yellow stone is a super volcano.
Hot Springs is due to the Volcanic Activity (although it may not erupt in near time but there is that magma very close to the surface which is heating the water and boiling water is creating those bubbles and also has some Sulfur and CO2 in it. All those different colors are due to different minerals that it contains. Obviously, each mineral has their own chemistry, Iron definitely will give that rusty brown or yellow color. Sulfur is will yellow or green.

The statistics associated with the Taupō eruptions are astounding:
"Oruanui eruption (also known as the Kawakawa event) of the Taupō Volcano was the world's largest known eruption in the past 70,000 years, with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. It occurred around 25,500 years ago and generated approximately 430 km3 (100 cu mi) of pyroclastic fall deposits, 320 km3 (77 cu mi) of pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits (mostly ignimbrite) and 420 km3 (100 cu mi) of primary intracaldera material, equivalent to 530 km3 (130 cu mi) of magma.
Modern Lake Taupō partly fills the caldera generated during this eruption.
Tephra from the eruption covered much of the central North Island with ignimbrite up to 200 m (660 ft) deep. The ignimbrite eruption(s) were possibly not as forceful as that of the later Hatepe eruption but the total impact of this eruption was somewhat greater. Most of New Zealand was affected by ashfall, with an 18 cm (7.1 in) ash layer left even on the Chatham Islands, 850 km (530 mi) away which included diatoms from erupted lake sediments. Later erosion and sedimentation had long-lasting effects on the landscape, and caused the Waikato River to shift from the Hauraki Plains to its current course through the Waikato to the Tasman Sea."

Talking about magical animals versus cattle grids , i lived on Norfolk Island for 11 months back in 1999/2000 and the cows there were free to roam , there were cattle grids all around the island but the cows had learned to roll over them and go about their day , hilarious

You got me confused, one minute you are heading South through Taumarunui next minute you have come down Piriarka hill with the spring on your left then you turn right to go to Turangi….. did you go out to Owhango or some place South….. lots of locals use that spring at Piriarka, I cracked up at how you pronounced our Taumarunui 😂All good
