【Video Overview】
Starting at Hiroo Station, the route enters Arisugawa-no-Miya Memorial Park. The park occupies the former site of a villa belonging to the Arisugawa-no-Miya imperial family during the Meiji era, and its layout makes use of the natural terrain of hills and a central pond, where families fishing for crayfish and water birds can be seen. Continuing through a residential neighborhood, the route reaches Azabu Hikawa Shrine, known as the real-world model for the Hi Shrine featured in the anime “”Sailor Moon.”” The votive tablets on display include many hand-drawn illustrations of characters from the series. The area around Sendai-zaka is home to several embassies, including the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, reflecting the area’s long-standing role as a diplomatic district. The route then passes Zenpuku-ji Temple (Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha), where a stone monument marks the site used as the lodgings of Townsend Harris, the first American Consul General to Japan, during the late Edo period. From there, the walk continues along Azabu-dori to Azabu-Juban Station.
Azabu-Juban is known for its Noryo Festival (Azabu-Juban Noryo Matsuri), which began in 1976 and typically draws over 300,000 visitors each August. At the time of filming, preparation work was underway, with tents and stages being assembled along Patio-dori and in Ajiro Park. One of the area’s landmarks is “”Kimi-chan,”” a bronze statue of a young girl created by sculptor Itaru Sasaki, inspired by the children’s song “”Akai Kutsu (Red Shoes).”” After passing Ichinohashi Park and climbing the steep stone steps of Juban Inari Shrine, the route crosses onto the ring road and heads toward Roppongi, where Keyakizaka-dori presents a continuous row of flagship stores from major international luxury brands.
At Roppongi Hills Arena, preparations were in progress for a summer Bon Odori event. The adjacent Mohri Garden is a compact Japanese-style garden developed on land that once served as a secondary residence of the Mohri clan during the Edo period. After passing through 66 Plaza, where the “”66 Doraemon Hiroba”” outdoor installation was on display, the route passes “”Maman”” (installed 2003), the large-scale sculpture by Louise Bourgeois. Continuing along Gaien-higashi-dori, the walk enters Hinokicho Park before reaching Tokyo Midtown. In the Courtyard area, a seasonal installation titled “”HIMAWARI-KOMICHI”” was on display, featuring artificial sunflowers and translucent fabric panels. The adjacent 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was hosting an exhibition titled “”Learning from Hojoki: Small Architecture for Reweaving Life.”” The walk concludes at Roppongi Station on the Toei Oedo Line, accessed through Tokyo Midtown’s basement level.
