A Tuesday morning in Osaka before dawn — from the stairs of Sakaisuji-Hommachi Station through the sleeping office streets of Semba and the old stone buildings of Kitahama, across the Tosabori River into Nakanoshima as the sky turns blue, through the quiet lanes of Kitashinchi and the Umeda underground, to Osaka Station as the first trains start to run.

The walk begins just before five, climbing out of Sakaisuji-Hommachi Station into a city that is still asleep. West through the office blocks of Semba, the streets lit only by lamps and vending machines, then past the old stone and brick buildings of Kitahama.
Across the Tosabori River and along the water beneath the expressway into Nakanoshima, where the sky behind the towers slowly turns from black to deep blue.
Then north through the lanes of Kitashinchi, every door now closed, past the Osaka Ekimae buildings and down into the Umeda underground, coming up at Osaka Station as the morning arrives.
