A Friday evening in Osaka, from the last of the daylight to full neon — starting among the boutiques of Nishi-Shinsaibashi, through Amerikamura, over Ebisubashi and along Dotonbori, down to the Tombori River Walk, then north up the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade to Nagahoribashi.

The walk begins just after six in Nishi-Shinsaibashi, where golf shops and small boutiques are switching on their window lights and the side streets are still quiet. A few blocks south is Amerikamura, the youth and used-clothing quarter that grew up here in the 1970s, with the triangle park at its center already filling up for the evening.

From there it is out onto Midosuji and its wide ginkgo-lined walkway, then Ebisubashi just as the Glico running man lights up against the dusk. Dotonbori comes next — the crab and the giant signs, a game center and a souvenir shop along the way — and then the steps down to the Tombori River Walk, where the neon lies on the water.

By the time the walk turns north again it is fully dark. Midosuji at night, then the long covered arcade of Shinsaibashi-suji, still busy with shoppers, and finally the quiet back streets of Higashi-Shinsaibashi, ending at the entrance to Nagahoribashi Station.
