A rainy Monday afternoon in Osaka, walked almost entirely under cover.

It starts at exit 4-B of Shinsaibashi Station, on Midosuji in the rain, and turns west into Amerikamura — the used-clothing quarter that began in the 1970s with a single shop bringing clothes over from the American West Coast. From there the route drops to the Tombori River Walk, the promenade opened along the Dotonbori canal in 2004 as part of bringing the water back into the city, then runs south under the expressway at Minatomachi, where a railway terminus stood until 1994.

Namba Parks is the turning point. It sits on the site of Osaka Stadium, home of the Nankai Hawks from 1950 until the club left for Fukuoka, and its terraced roof garden still keeps the bowl shape of the ground. From there the way back is a single unbroken roof: Ebisubashi-suji into the crowd, over Ebisubashi with the Glico sign doubled in the wet, the length of the four-hundred-year-old Shinsaibashi-suji arcade, and finally Semba-Shinsaibashi — narrower, older, and nearly empty — ending under the kilometre-long Semba Center Building.

About 4.5 km, a little over an hour, with music and Japanese/English captions.
