Gojo Shinmachi: The 400-Year-Old Town Time Forgot | Nara, Japan

Tucked along the old Kishu Kaido trade route in Gojo City, Nara, the historic street of Shinmachi has kept its Edo-period townscape for over 400 years. Once the castle town of Futami Castle, its merchant houses (machiya) were laid out with uniform frontages along a straight street — a layout still intact today, and one reason the area was designated a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in 2010.

Unlike many restored “old towns” built for tourists, Shinmachi is still lived and worked in — heritage sake breweries, craft shops, and family businesses operating out of the same buildings their ancestors did generations ago. In this video, we take you on a quick tour of Shinmachi including heritage businesses, cafes, bars, and shops.
