Beyond the Sea of Clouds — Life in a Chinese Mountain Village | 4K

What lies beyond Zhejiang’s famous Sea of Clouds?

Today, I’m walking through Shangzhou (上周) Village, a remote mountain village in Wuyi County, Zhejiang, China.

Hidden high in the mountains, Shangzhou is known for the spectacular Shangzhou Sea of Clouds (上周云海). But this time, I’m not here only for the famous view — I want to see the village behind it.

After rain, clouds can gather in the valleys below, leaving the surrounding mountains and village appearing above a vast white sea. This dramatic landscape has made the area especially popular with photographers.

Walking deeper into Shangzhou, I find old earthen houses, dark tiled roofs, stone paths, overgrown lanes, and homes built along the uneven mountain terrain.

I also meet a local resident along the way — one of those simple encounters that often becomes part of my memory of a village.

Shangzhou developed as a mountain settlement during the Ming Dynasty, and much of its traditional character can still be seen in its old houses and lanes.

Yet this is not a village frozen in time.

Old houses stand beside newer homes. Some buildings are still used, while others are slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. New paths and tourism facilities now connect the village with the nearby cloud-viewing area.

Near the end of the walk, the narrow village paths finally give way to the surrounding mountains.

There was no spectacular sea of clouds waiting for me on this particular day. But looking across these valleys, it isn’t difficult to imagine what happens when the clouds arrive.

Sometimes the landscape reveals itself immediately.
Sometimes, you have to come back another day.
