A Monday night in Osaka, walking back the way we came — east along the Dojima River from Shimo-Fukushima, onto the island of Nakanoshima, past the red-brick Central Public Hall standing lit and empty, and south through the old merchant grid to Honmachi.

The walk starts just after eight in Shimo-Fukushima and turns east along the Dojima, one of the two rivers that make Nakanoshima an island. The path runs below street level for a while — a brick walk between the water and a retaining wall, with the Umeda towers standing across the river. Past the lit terraces of Nakanoshima Banks it ducks under the elevated expressway and comes up beside Watanabebashi.
Nakanoshima is a sandbar that Osaka’s merchants built on four hundred years ago, when the rice warehouses of every domain in the country stood along these banks. What is there now is civic rather than commercial: the prefectural library, the old Bank of Japan, and the Central Public Hall of 1918 — red brick and copper, floodlit, with nobody in front of it at half past eight. From the park at the island’s east end the route crosses to Kitahama, then turns south into Semba, the merchant grid whose streets have not changed width since the Edo period. It comes out on Midosuji and follows the plane trees back to Honmachi, where the evening began two hours earlier.
