Fires are destroying the #amazonrainforest at the moment.
1 football field per second. Gone.

Deforestation is one of the biggest threats we face as a global community: it perpetuates and accelerates global warming. Our tropical forests have been reduced by 50% in the past 100 years. Why does this matter? Trees aren’t just pretty shade-makers. They’re one of Earth’s vital assets, absorbing the carbon dioxide and heat-trapping greenhouse gases human activities emit. Protecting the forests massively depends on rich governments not ducking their responsibilities and playing their part. However, animal agriculture is recognised as the leading cause of deforestation (FAO, 2006, 29), responsible for 91% of Amazon rainforest destruction. This is good to know because we can take empowered action at the individual level. If we opt for a plant-based diet, we can ease the stress our diets put on deforestation around the world. (The reason why a meat-eater’s diet requires more land is because their diet has a higher virtual food footprint. The meat-eater’s food also has to eat a lot of food). Video: @wwf_uk
