Western Sichuan’s Largest Grassland — Driving Deep into Ruoergai at 3,500m | 4K
If you love road trips through Western Sichuan, the Tibetan Plateau and truly vast high-altitude landscapes, this stretch of G248 captures the scale of Ruoergai in a remarkable 60 km drive. Starting in Ruoergai County, we head southwest toward Tangke Town, staying between 3,435 and 3,635 meters above sea level. Instead of steep mountain walls, the road opens onto broad valleys, rolling hills, alpine meadows and wetlands that seem to stretch all the way to the horizon.
Ruoergai lies on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, close to the meeting region of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai. The wider Zoige Basin is a huge Cenozoic fault-depression basin covering about 19,400 km², with most of its floor sitting between 3,400 and 3,600 meters. Its unusually broad river valleys and low hills explain why this landscape can feel almost like an immense plain despite its extreme altitude.
The geological story goes much deeper. During the Quaternary, a vast ancient Zoige Lake covered more than 10,000 km² of this basin. Research suggests that around 37,000 years ago the Yellow River cut through the basin and drained the paleolake, becoming a major turning point in the development of the modern river system. The grasslands, meandering rivers, marshes and peatlands visible today are part of that extraordinary long-term landscape evolution.
Ruoergai is also far more than pasture. The Sichuan Ruoergai Wetlands, a Wetland of International Importance, cover more than 166,000 hectares. These alpine peatlands form a critical water-conservation zone for the upper Yellow River and provide important breeding and migration habitat for the black-necked crane and other rare plateau wildlife. Large-scale restoration projects have continued across the region; by August 2026, about 232,500 hectares of ecological restoration had been completed.
The drive begins around Dazhasi Town, the county seat and political, economic and transport center of Ruoergai. Located at roughly 3,500 meters, it is crossed by both G213 and G248. Tibetan pastoral culture remains deeply rooted here: yaks and Tibetan sheep still dominate the surrounding grazing lands, while the town takes its name from Dazhasi Monastery, an important Gelug monastery of Tibetan Buddhism.
G248 is not simply a tourist road. It is an essential transport corridor linking the county seat with pastoral communities and Tangke. The Waqie–Tangke–Ruoergai section has undergone roadside grass planting, revegetation and windbreak construction, while newer projects continue improving viewpoints, parking areas, EV charging facilities and communications along major highways. Modern infrastructure is steadily reaching deeper into this remote high plateau.
After about 60 km we reach Tangke Town. Tangke sits at around 3,500 meters and has roughly 2.06 million mu of grassland. The area is closely associated with the famous Hequ horse, a traditional plateau breed known for endurance in cold, marshy terrain. Nearby are Sogzang Monastery and the celebrated First Bend of the Yellow River, where the White River meets the Yellow River. This drive, however, ends in Tangke Town before the Yellow River scenery itself appears.
The wider Ruoergai grasslands also hold an important place in modern Chinese history. During the Long March of 1935–1936, Red Army units crossed the cold, marshy grasslands of this region several times. High altitude, rain, low temperatures and wetlands made these crossings exceptionally difficult. Today’s paved highways have completely transformed travel across the plateau, yet the immense distance and exposed character of the landscape remain easy to feel.
Filmed as an immersive 4K driving experience with no narration and no music — only the authentic sounds of the road, the vehicle and the Western Sichuan plateau.
