The Greek Mountain Village Hanging Above the Sea
Watch this one on the biggest screen you’ve got, ideally a 4K TV, because this corner of mainland Greece earns it. Subtitles on too, I dropped in some context about Makrinitsa as we go.
There’s a Greece most people never bother looking for. It’s not on a beach. It’s clinging to the side of Mount Pelion, 630 meters up, staring straight down at the sea.
No cars allowed in this village. You just walk – stone streets climbing past mansions two, three hundred years old, carved wooden balconies, painted walls done by folk artists nobody remembers anymore. They call it “the noble village” around here, because rich families used to live in it, back when merchants and craftsmen from Pelion got rich off trade and poured that money straight into these houses. You can still feel it walking through.
I got there early, warm already at 26-27°C, plane trees shading the main square, a marble fountain from 1809 doing nothing in particular, a couple of cats stretching next to it like they own the place.
These houses are worth a fortune, but ivy doesn’t know that. It just climbs. And then out of nowhere, between two buildings, the whole Pagasetic Gulf opens up below you, Volos sitting there in the distance – the balcony of Pelion, they call it, for good reason.
You don’t rush a village like this. Narrow streets, a tiny Byzantine church, cobblestones under your feet, nothing else making noise except birds.
The next day I made it down to Fakistra beach, and it’s one of those places that looks completely different from above than up close. From the cliff, it’s spectacular – turquoise water tucked into the rocks like someone hid it there on purpose. Getting down took about 15 minutes on a steep, narrow path, definitely not the easiest walk, but worth every step.

Hola!! Al ver éste árbol que aparece al principio del vídeo, me recuerda a uno que era un castaño y cuando era un niño nos podíamos introducir dentro de su tronco para refugiarnos de cuando hacía mal tiempo, incluso hacer algo de fuego para calentarse cuando hacía algo de frío. El interior algunas veces se produce fuego y lo que es la parte exterior por su grosor no ardía. De la parte superior partían diferentes ramas con bastante grosor que servían para ciertos servicios una vez podados. Ésto estaba en una aldea de la provincia de Lugo, España.
