The walk sets out at dusk in Honmachi, the old business core of Osaka, and heads north along the Higashi-Yokobori waterway beneath the elevated Hanshin Expressway. It threads the quiet evening backstreets of Tanimachi and Uemachi, the historic plateau below Osaka Castle, until the city opens onto the Okawa river at Tenmabashi. Here, at the old Hachikenya landing that once received boats from Kyoto, the night skyline glitters on the water. The route crosses the long Tenmabashi bridge, slips into Tenma, and passes near Osaka Tenmangu, the shrine of the great summer Tenjin Festival. As the night deepens it winds through the Ogimachi backstreets into Tenma’s buzzing izakaya district, then finishes with a long stroll up the Tenjinbashisuji arcade — at 2.6 km, the longest covered shopping street in Japan.
