Kobe Old Town Walk|Motomachi Arcade, Nankinmachi & Kyu-Kyoryuchi to Sannomiya|4K HDR

A quiet morning walk through the old streets of Kobe —
from Nishi-Motomachi, through the historic Motomachi Shopping Street,
into Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown), and ending at Sannomiya.
No talking. No faces. Just the sounds of an old port city waking up.

Starting at the Hyogo Prefecture Milestone in Nishi-Motomachi,
where the modern boulevard meets the old port town,
the morning sky soft and grey before the rain.

Through the long covered arcade of Motomachi Shopping Street,
where century-old shops sit beside young cafes,
the route winds south into the red lanterns of Nankinmachi —
Japan’s lively Chinatown, alive with the scent of dim sum and tea.

Back through the arcade and past the elegant facades of Kyu-Kyoryuchi,
the former foreign settlement that shaped modern Kobe,
the walk ends at Sannomiya, the city’s beating heart.

— ABOUT KOBE OLD TOWN —
Kobe was opened to foreign trade in 1868, and the city that grew
around the harbor became Japan’s gateway to modern Western culture.
Three districts in the city center still hold that history.

Motomachi Shopping Street is one of Japan’s oldest covered arcades,
running 1.2 kilometers parallel to the harbor. Since the Meiji era,
it has been the main shopping thoroughfare of Kobe — a quiet mix of
traditional confectioners, jewelers, antique shops, and modern cafes.

Nankinmachi, just south of Motomachi, is one of Japan’s three major
Chinatowns, founded by Chinese merchants in the 1860s. Today its
red lanterns and stone gates frame around 100 restaurants and shops
selling Chinese dim sum, steamed buns, and tea.

Kyu-Kyoryuchi — the former foreign settlement — was where Western
diplomats and merchants lived from 1868 to 1899. Its grid-pattern
streets and brick facades still give central Kobe its distinct,
European-influenced character, leading directly to Sannomiya Station.

A quiet morning, walking the old streets of Kobe.
