A hot August afternoon in Osaka — from the old shopping streets of Minamimorimachi down to the river, through the shade of Nakanoshima Park, and south into the merchant blocks of Semba.

The walk starts at Minamimorimachi, where Tenjinbashi-suji meets the office blocks north of the river, and heads south in the flat light of a midsummer afternoon. Crossing Tenjinbashi over the Okawa, the city opens up — the cable-stayed Kawasaki Bridge upstream, the Umeda towers to the west — and the route drops straight into Nakanoshima Park, where dirt paths run under the trees and the rose garden sits between the two rivers. Past the red brick of the Osaka City Central Public Hall the walk turns south again, crossing Sendankibashi into Kitahama, then down Sankyubashi-suji through Koraibashi and Hiranomachi, past the stone front of Naniwa Church and the surviving old shops of Semba. It ends in Honmachi, where Midosuji’s ginkgo trees carry the last of the shade.
