The first half sets out from Sakaisuji-Honmachi just after half past seven, with the evening still holding thirty degrees. It crosses the quiet blocks of Semba, passes the shuttered toy and doll wholesalers of Matsuyamachi, and turns into Karahori Shotengai — one of the few covered arcades in central Osaka that came through the war intact, its lane still the width it always was. Beyond the arcade the ground rises onto the Uemachi plateau, where long temple walls and low houses leave the street almost silent, and then falls again to the elevated tracks at Tsuruhashi, where the grill smoke and red lanterns fill the passages beneath the station.
The second half is the same night, an hour later, walking back the other way. Out of the market lanes at twenty to nine, west along the main road past late pharmacies and lit convenience stores, up onto the quieter side of the plateau where the trees close over the pavement, beneath the Hanshin Expressway, through the shuttered electronics streets of Nipponbashi, and out at the wide crossing of Nagahoribashi at twenty to ten. Two hours of city sounds, with music and on-screen captions telling the story of each street along the way.

PART ONE — EAST TO TSURUHASHI
Semba is the merchant quarter Hideyoshi laid out, and its grid of streets has barely changed since; by half past seven the offices have emptied and only a standing bar or two is still lit. Matsuyamachi is the wholesale district for dolls, toys and festival goods — known locally as Matchamachi — and at this hour its awnings are still out over shuttered fronts. Karahori takes its name from a dry moat on the southern side of Osaka Castle, filled in long ago and built over with townhouses; because this pocket of the city escaped the wartime fires, the arcade and the lanes running off it kept their pre-war shape and their original width. Beyond it the route climbs the Uemachi plateau, the highest ground in Osaka and the ridge on which both the castle and Shitennoji stand, where temples were gathered along a single street in the Edo period. The half ends beneath the elevated tracks at Tsuruhashi, in a market that grew out of a post-war black market and has kept its low ceilings and narrow passages ever since.
PART TWO — WEST TO NAGAHORIBASHI
Leaving the market, the route runs west along a wide road and climbs the plateau again from the other side, through Uehonmachi and the long temple walls where the street is quiet enough to hear your own steps. It crosses beneath the Hanshin Expressway — the loop line whose first section opened in 1964 — and drops into the streets around Shitadera, where the Korean kitchens are still serving. North on Sakaisuji, once Osaka’s main street with its department stores and trams, past the stone banks and brick trading houses that remain, and into Nipponbashi, which turned from a street of second-hand bookshops into the electronics quarter after the war. The walk ends at Nagahoribashi — a bridge name with no bridge, since the canal dug in 1622 to carry timber was filled in during the 1960s and now runs as a long arcade underground.
