A quiet 4K Japan walk through the historic streets of Sakura, Chiba, leading to Makata Shrine (麻賀多神社) and its remarkable 800+ year-old ginkgo tree.
Starting in Shinmachi, this summer morning walk passes through the historic castle town of Sakura before arriving at Makata Shrine, the traditional guardian shrine of the former Sakura Domain.
Known locally as “Makata-sama,” the shrine is dedicated to Wakamusubi-no-Mikoto (稚産霊命), a deity associated with bringing things together and nurturing growth.
Makata Shrine has deep connections with the history of Sakura. It served as the guardian shrine of the Sakura Domain and received the devotion of successive lords of Sakura.
The present main sanctuary was rebuilt in 1843 under Hotta Masayoshi, lord of the Sakura Domain, and is now designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Sakura City.
One of the most remarkable sights within the shrine grounds is the enormous ginkgo tree, believed to be more than 800 years old.
Surrounded by old trees and greenery, the shrine offers a remarkably peaceful atmosphere only a short walk from the historic center of Sakura.
This walk captures the transition from the streets of an old Japanese castle town to a shrine that has watched over the local community for generations.

千葉県佐倉市の新町から、麻賀多神社まで歩く夏の朝の散歩です。
佐倉はかつて佐倉藩の城下町として栄え、現在も街の中には歴史の面影が残っています。
今回の目的地である麻賀多神社は、佐倉藩の総鎮守として歴代藩主をはじめ地域の人々から崇敬されてきた神社です。古くから「まかたさま」の名で親しまれています。
御祭神は稚産霊命（わかむすびのみこと）。
現在の本殿は天保14年（1843年）に佐倉藩主・堀田正睦の時代に造営され、現在は佐倉市指定有形文化財となっています。
境内には樹齢800年以上と伝えられる大銀杏があり、古木や大樹に囲まれた静かな空間が広がっています。
新町の街並みから麻賀多神社へ。
