Virtual Tour | Eiheiji: Japan’s Most Famous Zen Temple – Explore the Temple of Eternal Peace

The history of Eihei-ji begins in 1244, when the Buddhist master Dōgen founded the temple deep in the mountains of what is now Fukui Prefecture, establishing it as the spiritual center of Sōtō Zen Buddhism. Originally named Daibutsu-ji, it was soon renamed Eihei-ji, meaning “Temple of Eternal Peace.” Over centuries, it grew into one of the two head temples of the Sōtō sect (alongside Sōji-ji), and a leading training monastery where monks dedicate themselves to strict daily routines of meditation, chanting, and physical work. Despite periods of decline, internal disputes, and repeated destruction by fires – most notably in the 14th and 15th centuries – the temple was rebuilt and sustained through imperial and shogunate patronage. Today, its vast grounds of over 70 buildings, surrounded by ancient cedar forests, continue to embody Dōgen’s teachings and serve as a living center of Zen practice.

While Eihei-ji is less defined by dramatic myths than some sites, its spiritual atmosphere is steeped in symbolic meaning and quiet legend. The temple’s layout itself is said to mirror the posture of a monk in meditation, reinforcing the idea that the entire space is an expression of Zen practice. Within its halls, figures such as Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, and other sacred guardians reflect layers of Buddhist cosmology that can feel mysterious to visitors. The surrounding forest—home to cedar trees said to be hundreds of years old – adds to the sense of timelessness, often described as a place where the boundary between the physical and spiritual world feels thin. Stories of Dōgen’s journey to China, his transmission of Zen teachings, and the continued presence of his spirit through daily rituals give Eihei-ji a quieter, contemplative mythology – one rooted not in ghosts or curses, but in discipline, enlightenment, and the enduring search for inner peace.
