24 Hours in the World’s Northernmost Town | Longyearbyen, Svalbard (4K Video)
Today, we’re exploring Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the world’s northernmost town, located deep in the Arctic, around 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole.
During our 24 hours in Longyearbyen, we explore the town, visit its main landmarks, discover its mining history, stay at a local hotel, try Arctic food, experience dog sledding on wheels, and finally embark on a micro-expedition cruise with Secret Atlas.
Our entire journey in Svalbard was booked through and organized by Secret Atlas, from our arrival in Longyearbyen until the end of our Arctic expedition.

Longyearbyen is located at 78° north, only around 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole. Despite its remote location, it is a modern international community with approximately 2,600 residents from more than 50 countries.
The town was founded in 1906 by American businessman John Munroe Longyear, who established the first coal mine and named the settlement Longyear City. It was renamed Longyearbyen in 1916 after Norwegian mining company Store Norske took over the operations.
