The walk sets out from inside Osaka Station at twenty to eight, still packed with people, then climbs to the elevated decks above the bus terminal where the Umeda skyline burns on every side. It follows Yotsubashi-suji south past Nishi-Umeda, turns at Sakurabashi into the narrow lanes of Kitashinchi, and comes out on the water at Nakanoshima, where the expressway above the river is lit in red and blue. From Yodoyabashi the route runs down Midosuji into the old merchant blocks of Semba and Doshomachi, ending in Honmachi and Sakaisuji-Honmachi with the offices gone dark. The city’s own sound stays with you the whole way, with a little music laid quietly underneath.
