Inside Hokkaido’s Historical Village: 52 Buildings Near Sapporo
aStep inside the Historical Village of Hokkaido—an open-air museum near Sapporo where 52 historic buildings recreate life from the Meiji era through early Shōwa.
We follow the village route through old shops, homes, school corridors, a working printing press, a martial-arts hall, forestry camps, farm buildings and Hokkaido’s once-enormous herring industry. There are also horse-drawn trams, suspiciously active wax figures and a late attempt to master traditional wooden stilts.
The Historical Village of Hokkaido, known in Japanese as Hokkaidō Kaitaku no Mura (北海道開拓の村), preserves buildings relocated or reconstructed from communities across Hokkaido. The museum is divided into town, fishing, farming and mountain-village districts.
