The walk begins in Honmachi before the offices open, on a Midosuji so empty you can hear your own footsteps. This is Semba, the merchant quarter laid out when Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle, where canals once carried the rice and cotton that made the city “the Kitchen of the Nation.” The boulevard itself was widened between 1930 and 1937 — from six metres to forty-four — and planted with some 800 ginkgo trees, with the power lines buried out of sight. The route passes Kita-Mido, one of the two temples that gave Midosuji its name, then a monument marking fifty years since the road was finished. At Yodoyabashi it crosses the Tosabori River beside the stone dome of the Bank of Japan, completed in 1903, and continues over Nakanoshima, the island of warehouses that became the civic heart of Osaka. North of the river the pavements widen again, and behind the towers of Sonezaki sits Tsuyu-no-Tenjin Shrine — better known as Ohatsu Tenjin, after the heroine of Chikamatsu’s 1703 puppet play about a double suicide that really happened. In late June its courtyard holds a ring of woven grass for the summer purification. The morning ends in Umeda, a former marsh turned into Osaka’s largest commercial district, where the underground passages are already filling with commuters. No talking, just the city and a little music.
