The walk sets out in the golden light of early evening on Nakanoshima, the slender island between two rivers that has been the civic and cultural heart of Osaka for centuries. It passes the red-brick Central Public Hall of 1918 and the neo-classical Nakanoshima Library, then crosses at Yodoyabashi beside the stone dome of the Bank of Japan. From there it heads south into Semba, Osaka’s oldest merchant district, where Meiji- and Taisho-era buildings hide among glass towers and a small shrine sits tucked between the offices. As the sun sinks, the route winds through Honmachi, beneath the elevated Hanshin Expressway, and on into Minami — the youthful backstreets of America-mura and Horie — before finishing on the grand Midosuji boulevard and in the glittering Shinsaibashi arcade. No talking, just the sounds of the city and a little music.
