Rainy Mountain Drive to China’s Viral Floating Bridge | Enshi, Hubei 4K

This drive begins at the Shadaogou Service Area on the Yilai Expressway and follows National Highways G209 and G351 north through Xuan’en County in Enshi, Hubei. The 52.3-kilometer journey ends at Shiziguan Tourist Area, capturing mountain highways, rural settlements, forested valleys and the changing scenery of the Wuling Mountains in steady rain.

Xuan’en lies deep in the mountainous southwest of Hubei. Rivers have cut through the landscape for countless years, while soluble rock formations have created a dramatic karst environment of narrow valleys, cliffs, caves, sinkholes and layered peaks. Light to moderate rain in May covers the distant mountains in mist, deepens the green of the forests and gives the wet road a quiet, cinematic atmosphere.

The Shadaogou area is surrounded by Tujia and Miao communities. Nearby Pengjiazhai is known for its historic stilt-house complex, whose origins date back to the early Qing period. Built into steep hillsides, these timber homes use raised lower floors, interconnected structures and layered roofs to adapt to limited flat land and the region’s humid mountain climate. They remain an important expression of Tujia architecture and living rural culture.

G209 and G351 are more than scenic roads. They connect expressway access points with mountain towns, villages and tourist destinations across this difficult terrain. During the drive, the road repeatedly shifts between hillsides, valleys and inhabited areas, climbing from 555 to 1,149 meters. Rain-soaked bends, long gradients and low clouds preserve the authentic feeling of driving through rural central China.

Shiziguan was historically one of Xuan’en’s fortified mountain passes, an old market and a stopping point on the Sichuan salt route. Five rocky hills resembling lions guarded the southeastern approach, inspiring the traditional name “Five Lions Guarding the Pass.” Today, the area is famous for its green canyon water and a floating bridge approximately 400 meters long that allows both visitors and vehicles to travel across the surface.

As cars move over the bridge, the structure gently follows the water and waves spread out on both sides. This unusual sight has turned Shiziguan into one of China’s most recognizable viral driving destinations.

This video does not show only the famous floating road. It records the entire 52-kilometer journey leading to it—from a modern expressway service area, onto ordinary national highways, through rainy villages and misty Wuling valleys, and finally toward the floating bridge at Shiziguan.
