I swear, I am too game coded. I cannot hear Hokkaido without thinking Sinnoh/Hisui from the Pokémon series. (And my recent trip to Chicago to see the Pokémon Fossil Museum exhibit at the Field Museum doesn’t help with that!) So I am looking at Otaru and seeing the inspiration for Canalave City from Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.
Which kind of makes me curious. I know that several prefectures have Pokémon as official mascots, but did Otaru ever play on the idea of them being the basis for Canalave?
