People Told Me This Was China’s Biggest Slum… Until I Arrived 🇨🇳

Everyone warned us not to come here. They called it China’s biggest slum, a place tourists never see.

But once we stepped inside, what we found was nothing like we expected.

Join us as we explore one of China’s most misunderstood neighborhoods, meet the people who call it home, and discover why first impressions don’t always tell the full story.

  1. What’s one thing YouTubers don’t show about China that you’d like us to explore? 🇨🇳 Drop your ideas below—we might make a video about it! 👇

  2. This is just an old part of a big city, an urban village. And the landlords or landowners there are millionaires if not even billionaires…

  3. In many cities across Guangdong, there are urban villages like this. They used to be rural areas, but as Guangdong's economy developed earlier than other parts of China and cities expanded, these villages became part of the urban landscape. Many people from other provinces came to work here and needed affordable housing, so the villagers took out loans to build rental buildings for migrants. Since the villagers' plots of land were all adjacent, they tried to build as large as possible to make the most of the land, which resulted in very narrow gaps between buildings. These urban villages have provided cheap accommodation for many low-income people. In the past, urban villages were quite chaotic, with crime rates higher than in other areas. Over the past 20 years, most of these villages have been demolished and redeveloped, with landlords receiving huge compensation and achieving financial freedom. However, some urban villages still remain, and now their management has become much more standardized. Cities still need these urban villages—if they were all turned into apartment blocks, many low-income people would have to move to the distant suburbs.
