[History of Ginzan Onsen]

The history of Ginzan Onsen began about 500 years ago with the discovery of the “Nobesawa Silver Mine.”

After flourishing as a silver mining town, it opened as a hot spring resort (Tojiba) in the middle of the Edo period.

It is said that the hot spring originated as a place for miners to recover from their exhaustion.

However, as silver production declined, the mine was eventually closed.

After that, the local people made use of the abundant hot spring water to fully develop the area into a traditional hot spring town where people could stay and heal their bodies.

In 1913, a major flood occurred when the Ginzan River overflowed, destroying most of the hot spring town.

The local residents overcame this disaster and rose up to rebuild.

During the reconstruction process, three- to four-story Western-style wooden buildings were built one after another, incorporating elements of the “Taisho Modern” style that was popular at the time.

The current beautiful scenery, with plaster walls, Kote-e (plaster reliefs), and gas lamps lining the river, was established during this era.

In 1986, the Nobesawa Silver Mine Ruins were designated as a National Historic Site, recognizing its historical value.

Today, it is a world-famous Japanese hot spring destination, known for its mystical landscape that served as the setting for the NHK drama “Oshin” and is rumored to be an inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s anime masterpiece “Spirited Away.
