China’s Century-Old Seaside School Village (Jimei, Xiamen🇨🇳) | 4K

Jimei School Village (集美学村) lies across the bay from Xiamen Island, a unique educational town where architecture, history, and coastal scenery come together. Founded in the early 20th century by the renowned overseas Chinese philanthropist Tan Kah Kee (陈嘉庚), it reflects his vision that education could transform both individuals and society.

The campus is renowned for its distinctive “Jiageng Style” architecture, blending traditional Southern Fujian rooflines with Western structural elements. Red-tiled roofs, elegant colonnades, and sweeping silhouettes line the waterfront, creating one of China’s most recognizable university landscapes.

At the heart of the area is the Dragon Boat Pool (龙舟池), where dragon boat races are held during the Dragon Boat Festival. The calm water mirrors the surrounding school buildings, while students and local residents gather along the promenades throughout the day.
Nearby, the Ao Yuan (鳌园) preserves Tan Kah Kee’s memorial complex, where granite sculptures and reliefs celebrate Chinese history, culture, and patriotism. The memorial faces the sea, reflecting the lifelong connection between overseas Chinese communities and their homeland.

Today, Jimei remains a vibrant university district, home to Jimei University and several educational institutions. Tree-lined avenues, cycling students, seaside walkways, and cafés give the area a youthful atmosphere while preserving its historic character.

Jimei School Village is more than a campus. It is a living legacy of education, architecture, and overseas Chinese culture—a place where learning, community, and the sea have shaped one another for more than a century.
