Shimogo, Fukushima (福島県下郷町) – Negi soba at Ouchi-juku Yamatoya (大内宿大和屋) 2026 Jun. 17

We visited Ouchi-juku (大内宿), a former post station along the Aizu Nishi Kaido route during Japan’s Edo period. Today, it’s located in Shimogo, Minamiaizu District, Fukushima Prefecture, and it is known for its thatched-roof buildings that line its main street.

Additionally, the area is know for Soba (buckwheat noodles) that are eaten with a giant green onion (ねぎそば) that is to be used like chopsticks. It’s somewhat awkward to use, and the onion is a bit bitter, but it goes remarkably well with the soba noodles. Several such soba establishments can be found in Ouchi-juku, with Yamatoya (大内宿大和屋) being one of the prominent ones. Definitely recommended.
