Sauntering around Ryogoku, a walking tour through the heart of Japan’s wrestling spirit [4K]

[Introduction]
Ryogoku is a historic district in eastern Tokyo, best known as the spiritual home of sumo wrestling. Located in Sumida Ward along the Sumida River, it has long been a place where tradition and urban life blend together, preserving the atmosphere of old Edo while standing in modern Tokyo.

At the center of Ryogoku is the Ryogoku Kokugikan, the main sumo arena in Japan. Here, grand sumo tournaments are held several times a year, attracting fans from all over the world. The surrounding area is filled with sumo stables, statues of famous wrestlers, and restaurants serving chanko-nabe, the hearty hotpot traditionally eaten by sumo wrestlers.

Ryogoku also offers rich cultural and historical attractions. Nearby museums such as the Edo-Tokyo Museum (currently undergoing renovation/redevelopment) and small memorial sites help visitors understand daily life in the Edo period. Walking along the Sumida River adds a peaceful contrast to the energetic sumo culture.

Today, Ryogoku is both a tourist destination and a living cultural district—where visitors can experience Japan’s deep traditions while enjoying the rhythm of a modern city.
