Discover the Transfăgărășan: One of Europe’s Most Spectacular Mountain Passes
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful roads in the world, the Transfăgărășan winds its way through the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest in the Romanian Carpathians. Made famous by the British motoring show Top Gear, this legendary road offers an unforgettable experience filled with hairpin bends, breathtaking panoramas, and stunning scenery.
Built in the 1970s across some of Romania’s most challenging terrain, the Transfăgărășan connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia. Stretching over 90 kilometers, it meanders through deep valleys, past dramatic cliffs, through vast forests, and past spectacular alpine peaks.
One of the highlights of the route is the magnificent Lake Bâlea, a glacial lake situated at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. Surrounded by majestic mountains, it offers an exceptional natural setting and is a must-see for travelers and photography enthusiasts.
Along the way, visitors discover waterfalls, tunnels carved into the rock, mountain pastures, and some of the most impressive panoramic views in Europe. The famous Bâlea Waterfall and Romania’s longest road tunnel add even more character to this unique adventure.
The Transfăgărășan is also renowned for its wildlife. It is not uncommon to spot brown bears, deer, or eagles in their natural habitat. The local shepherds and their vast flocks of sheep are a reminder that mountain traditions remain very much alive in this region.
Generally open from June to October due to extreme weather conditions, this road is particularly spectacular during the summer, when the alpine meadows are carpeted with wildflowers and the verdant peaks contrast with the blue sky.
With its breathtaking scenery, fascinating history, and wild atmosphere, the Transfăgărășan is much more than just a road: it’s one of Europe’s greatest road trips and a must-see destination for all nature and travel lovers.

For me, the Transfăgărășan, the village of Moieciu and the Peleș Castle represent one of the most beautiful combinations that Romania can offer.
The Transfăgărășan impresses with the force of nature. It is not just a road, but a journey through clouds, cliffs and alpine lakes, where each curve reveals a landscape that seems more spectacular than the previous one. There are few places in Europe where the mountains feel so close and so grandiose.
They are a complete different charm. There the beauty does not come from the drama of the landscape, but from the silence. The houses spread out on the hills, the hayfields, the smell of freshly mown grass and the silhouette of the mountains at sunset create the sensation of a world that is not in a hurry anywhere. This is the location where you simply guess where you are.
Peleș Castle adds elegance and romanticism to the story. Set among the fir trees, it seems to be taken from a European fairy tale. It impresses not only with its architecture, but also with its atmosphere. In order to do this, you need to be able to use real air.
Together, these places say something beautiful about Romania: that true wealth is not just in monuments or landscapes, but in the way nature, history and simple life meet. If you don’t know what to do with it, it’s easy to impress when you hear it, I’m sure you’ll get it right now.

Amazing 😊😊😊
What do you think of these places, of the bears in the wilderness, of the landscapes, of the people who live there? Leave your thoughts in the comments, I am very curious about what these images convey to you, with much love and respect, Sebastian 😊❤
I think that in these places where the balance has been upset and there is no normal wildlife management, there are such terrible situations. In Romania, 12,000 bears are roaming wild! Why do we need so many? They should be shot, as well as the other overpopulated species! Nature usually takes care of the balance, but this is not the case!
Saludos a tu bella novia..!! ❤️ 🇲🇽
I’ve seen 8 bears in the suburbs of Boston
