Secret Hubei — Remote Rural China Mountain Driving on the Chongqing–Hubei Border | 4K POV
Welcome to one of the hidden mountain corners of Hubei, right on the Chongqing–Hubei border.
In this 4K POV drive, we explore a remote rural mountain road near Taiyanghe Township, Enshi, Hubei, just after leaving the S201 Shiruguan Tunnel and close to the Maocaoba Scenic Area of Fengjie County, Chongqing. This is not a famous tourist highway or a polished scenic route. It is a real mountain village road and fire road system hidden between forests, abandoned industrial traces, old rural settlements and massive karst cliffs.
The route begins near S201 on the Hubei side of the border, in the mountains between Fengjie and Enshi. From there, we drive into a quiet village road, pass through remote countryside, and continue onto rough fire roads that lead deeper into the mountains. Along the way, the scenery changes from village houses and narrow rural lanes to forested slopes, gravel tracks, abandoned mining remains, thick vegetation and dramatic limestone walls rising above the valley.
This area belongs to the wider karst mountain landscape of western Hubei and eastern Chongqing. Around Fengjie’s Xinglong area, the terrain is shaped by high mountains, deep valleys, vertical climate zones and limestone formations. Nearby Maocaoba is known as a high-altitude mountain tourism area, while the Enshi side is close to Taiyanghe Township, home to the famous Soubuya Stone Forest, one of the best-known karst landscapes in the region. The huge rock walls seen in this drive are part of that same raw geological character: steep, broken, green, and almost untouched.
This drive also shows the uncertainty of exploring real rural mountain roads in China. The first branch eventually becomes too steep and muddy after rain, making it impossible to continue safely. After turning back, we return to the fire road junction and try another route. That second route also ends unexpectedly when the narrow road is blocked, likely by a vehicle used by local beekeepers. With no way to continue, we turn back again, return to the village road, circle around the settlement, and finally drive back to the original starting point on S201.
What makes this route special is not just the scenery, but the feeling of entering a forgotten borderland. Chongqing’s Fengjie County has long been connected with mountain passes, old trade routes, the Three Gorges, Baidi City, Qutang Gorge and the dramatic landscapes of eastern Chongqing. On the Hubei side, Enshi is famous for Tujia and Miao culture, karst mountains, folk songs, stone forests and deep rural valleys. Between them, small roads like this still carry the everyday life of villages, forests, agriculture, beekeeping and mountain work.
This is Secret Hubei in the truest sense: remote rural China, a narrow mountain road, a borderland between Chongqing and Hubei, and a drive that does not end with a grand viewpoint, but with the reality of the road itself.
