I stayed at Shosenkaku Kagetsu, an exclusive adults’ retreat with just 28 rooms, located in Echigo Yuzawa Onsen, Niigata Prefecture.
Although it is conveniently located only about 70 minutes from Tokyo by Joetsu Shinkansen and just a 5-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, stepping inside the ryokan feels like entering a completely different world, where the bustle of the station area fades away into peaceful tranquility.
What makes this ryokan even more special is that it was once featured in the Michelin Guide, earning a 3-star rating for its exceptional comfort. During my stay, I enjoyed visiting four uniquely designed open-air baths and relaxing with the complimentary free-flow service in the lounge, where guests can sample a selection of Niigata’s renowned local sake each evening.
The thoughtful hospitality, warm atmosphere, and personalized service that only a small luxury ryokan can provide made this a truly unforgettable and rejuvenating experience.”
