China’s Most Picturesque Watertown | A Day in Wuzhen 烏鎮水鄉

A cinematic vlog from Wuzhen, China’s most picturesque water town. This is a continuation of my “Four Seasons Hangzhou” series — so if you loved that peaceful vibe, you’ll feel right at home here.

~China’s Water Towns: A Living Ink Painting ~

For over a thousand years, China’s ancient water towns have been called “zhen”—canal-crossed villages where life moves at the pace of a drifting boat. Built during the Song and Ming dynasties, these towns are often described as “living ink paintings”: whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs, stone bridges arched like crescent moons, and reflections that ripple with every passing oar.

Wuzhen: The Heart of Jiangnan — China’s most picturesque watertown

Among the dozens of water towns near Shanghai and Hangzhou, Wuzhen is arguably the most captivating. Divided into six districts, two stand out: Dong Zha (East Gate) and Xi Zha (West Gate). Dong Zha feels like stepping into a preserved postcard—narrow alleys, indigo dye workshops, and locals drying noodles under wooden eaves. Xi Zha is wider, livelier, and magical at night when lanterns and the full moon double themselves in the black canals.

What makes Wuzhen special isn’t just its beauty—it’s that people still live here. You’ll hear mahjong tiles clicking behind doorways, smell soy milk and scallion pancakes at dawn, and watch grandmothers fan themselves on stone steps. It’s not a museum. It’s a breathing town.

This vlog follows a day there: from a quiet boat ride through Dong Zha, to duck hot pot in Xi Zha, to a sunset witnessed alongside a full moon—and finally, breakfast on Hefang Street back in Hangzhou.

  1. Which part of the watertown felt most serene to you? 🌿
For me, it's between the sunset scene/full moon over the canal and the indigo fabric blowing in the wind. Let me know in the comments below! 👇
    哪一幕让你觉得最治愈?🌿
    对我来说,是在黃昏/月亮倒映在运河上的那一刻,和蓝印花布在风中飘动的那一幕之间纠结。👇
