One of England’s Finest Historic Houses: Audley End House and Gardens

Welcome to the grandest house in Essex! If you’re a fan of exploring Britain’s most majestic historic houses, you’ve likely heard of Audley End. This Jacobean masterpiece is one of the finest examples of 17th-century architecture, and today we’re taking you through its gilded halls. Among all the historic houses managed by English Heritage, Audley End stands out for its perfect blend of royal history and stunning natural beauty. For anyone curating a bucket list of historic houses to visit this year, this estate is an absolute must-see.

Audley End House was once one of the largest and most opulent houses in Jacobean England. Built by the 1st Earl of Suffolk, it was so magnificent that King Charles II actually purchased it to use as a royal palace. While the house was later reduced in size, it remains a breathtaking architectural marvel. From the intricate Great Hall to the intimate Victorian service wing—where you can see exactly how the “downstairs” staff lived—the history here is palpable in every room.

Why You Need to Visit www.english-heritage.org.uk
What makes Audley End truly unique isn’t just the house itself, but the entire landscape:

The Gardens: Designed by the legendary “Capability” Brown, the parklands offer sweeping views and tranquil walks by the River Cam.

The Organic Kitchen Garden: A vibrant, working garden where you can see heritage fruits and vegetables being grown just as they were in the 19th century.

The Stables: Meet the resident horses and discover the vital role they played in the daily life of the estate.

To truly understand life at a great estate, one must look beyond the gold leaf. The 1880 service wings offer a fascinating “below stairs” perspective, preserved to look exactly as they did during the Victorian era. Here, the narrative shifts from leisure to labour.

Whether you’re a history buff, a garden enthusiast, or just looking for a picturesque day trip from London, Audley End offers an immersive experience that brings the past to life.

  2. Another lovely video, this seemed so familiar and I had to refer back to photos I took when we were back in the UK in 2018. We had stopped at Audley randomly after spending a few days visiting family in Newcastle and found it to be enchanting. We also enjoyed our Harry Potter, Heartbeat and All creatures great and small tours with trips to Leavesdon Studio, Whitby, York, Goathland and the Herriot museum.

  3. Another triumph. Beautiful manor house well preserved. Thank you for the informative history I'm beautiful videography. Thank you for sharing. Cheers Ron
