Erhai Lake is one of the most breathtaking highland lakes in southwest China, located beside the ancient city of Dali in Yunnan Province. Despite its name meaning “Ear Sea,” it is actually a freshwater lake shaped like an ear, stretching over 40 kilometers.
Surrounded by the majestic Cangshan Mountains on one side and traditional Bai villages on the other, Erhai offers a perfect blend of nature and culture. The lake is famous for its crystal-clear water, changing light throughout the day, and poetic scenery that feels almost unreal.
A peaceful walk or bike ride along the lakeshore reveals fishermen casting nets at sunrise, white-walled Bai houses reflecting on the water, and flocks of birds gliding across the sky. Popular spots include Caicun Wharf, Longkan Village, and the scenic Erhai ecological corridor.
Erhai is not just a destination—it’s an atmosphere. At sunrise, the lake glows with golden light. At sunset, the sky turns pastel pink and orange, creating a dreamlike reflection on the water. For many travelers, this is where time slows down.
Xizhou Ancient Town is a well-preserved traditional town located on the western shore of Erhai Lake, known for its rich Bai ethnic culture and distinctive architecture.
Unlike the more commercialized areas of Dali, Xizhou retains an authentic, lived-in charm. The town is famous for its Bai-style courtyard houses, characterized by white walls, gray tiles, and ornate decorative paintings.
Walking through Xizhou feels like stepping back in time. Narrow streets, local markets, and the aroma of freshly baked “Xizhou baba” (a traditional baked pastry) fill the air. The morning market is especially vibrant, offering a glimpse into daily life.
Cultural landmarks such as the Yan Family Compound showcase the elegance and prosperity of Bai merchants in the past. Meanwhile, golden rice fields surrounding the town create stunning seasonal landscapes, especially in autumn.
Xizhou is not just a place to visit—it’s a place to experience the rhythm of traditional life in Yunnan.
