Görlitz was first mentioned in historical records in 1071 📜 and quickly became an important trading hub on the famous Via Regia — one of Europe’s oldest trade routes connecting east and west 🚚. During the late Middle Ages, the city flourished as part of the powerful Lusatian League, bringing wealth and influence that can still be seen in its grand architecture today.
Remarkably, Görlitz survived World War II with very little damage 💣, leaving its historic center almost completely intact — something extremely rare in Germany. After the war, the Neisse River became the new border, dividing the city into German Görlitz and Polish Zgorzelec.
