A typical setup is minimal but efficient: scissors worn smooth from years of use, a straight razor, a spray bottle, and a worn cloth draped over the customer’s shoulders. There’s no appointment system, no rush—just a steady flow of locals who sit down for a quick trim, shave, or even a head massage. Conversations drift easily between barber and customer, covering everything from cricket scores to daily life. In many ways, these chairs double as social hubs.
What makes Kolkata’s street barbers unique is the balance between affordability and skill. For a small amount—sometimes as little as ₹50—you can get a haircut that’s surprisingly precise. Kolkata শহরের ব্যস্ত রাস্তাগুলোর মাঝেই এক বিশেষ দৃশ্য চোখে পড়ে—খোলা আকাশের নিচে বসে কাজ করছেন রাস্তার নাপিতরা। বড় কোনো দোকান নেই, নেই এয়ার কন্ডিশন বা চকচকে চেয়ার; তবুও এই ছোট্ট সেটআপগুলোর মধ্যেই লুকিয়ে আছে বছরের পর বছর ধরে গড়ে ওঠা দক্ষতা আর অভিজ্ঞতা। গাছের ছায়া, ফুটপাথের এক কোণ, বা বাজারের পাশে—যেখানেই একটু জায়গা পাওয়া যায়, সেখানেই তৈরি হয়ে যায় তাদের অস্থায়ী সেলুন।
